Description:

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for detailed job description of the role.
Are you a pharmacist with a passion for developing others and a desire to develop yourself into a senior pharmacist?
We’re looking for a motivated individual to manage our team of Foundation Pharmacists, the on-call service and support the pharmacist service to the dispensaries both at Southampton General Hospital and at our sister site, the Royal South Hants (RSH) hospital. If appointed on a progressive basis, you will be fully supported to deliver this, and will not have budgetary or full management responsibility until you are ready to progress to a band 8a level.
You’ll need to be compassionate, organised, flexible and a great communicator.
As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to.
All non-clinical roles may involve a mixture of on site and remote working, Specific details and flexible working options can be discussed as part of the interview process. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.
Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.
The pharmacy department is well-respected within the Trust, employing nearly 400 members of staff and delivering services across a wide range of specialties. The foundation pharmacist rotation includes dispensary, oncology pharmacy, aseptics, medicines advice and clinical trials, as well as a wide range of clinical ward cover including medicine, paediatrics, cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, surgery and women’s health, many of which are tertiary centres for their specialties.
We currently have fourteen pharmacists on the Foundation Rotation, which rotates every 6-12 weeks. In August 24, we will be adding an additional ten pharmacists to this rotation, with the expectation that recruitment will not need to be repeated during the next year. Your role will be to co-ordinate the rota, line manage these individuals, provide pastoral care and support, and respond to any issues which may arise in the rotations. Each pharmacist is assigned a mentor who will be a first point of contact.
You will also be responsible for the on-call service for UHS. The on-call pharmacists are mostly Foundation Pharmacists and they provide a telephone-based service from home overnight, only coming on site if necessary.
The dispensaries are staffed by Foundation Pharmacists on a rotational basis. You will be expected to support their training in these rotations and provide assistance and cross-cover when required. The RSH has a lead pharmacist on site who can provide support and supervision in your absence.

Responsibilities:

a) Providing management and leadership for the rotational program for band 6 foundation level pharmacists.
b) Managing the pharmacy emergency duty service provision to the trust
c) Providing senior management pharmacist support to the pharmacy department dispensary departments at SGH and RSH.
Experience of hospital pharmacy services, teaching and training, and staff management are essential.
You will occasionally need to travel between sites. There is a free staff minibus provided, or parking can be arranged for this purpose.
We are advertising both a band 8a and a band 7-to-8a progressive position. Our preferred candidate would be someone who is able to work immediately at band 8a level. Therefore if we have an applicant who is appointable to the role, they will be offered the position. However if we do not have a suitable band 8a applicant, then we will consider offering the post as a development opportunity to a pharmacist who fulfils the requirements of a band 7 pharmacist and is willing to work towards becoming a band 8a pharmacist.
The Trust is moving towards 7 day working. You will be expected to contribute to one evening shift (5-7pm) per week in dispensary, and one weekend shift (9-5pm), either Saturday or Sunday, once every 6 weeks
