Job Summary

Join our Corporate and Investment Bank team and help us ensure data quality and compliance across our data assets.

  • As a Data Governance Specialist, you will report to the Head of Data Management and Governance and oversee the data management practices and governance frameworks within the Corporate and Investment Bank (CIB).
  • You will provide guidance and administer data governance and compliance policies to support external (e.g. regulatory) as well as internal requirements (e.g. Absa data management standards).
  • You will collaborate closely with stakeholders across various business units and functions across CIB, helping to establish robust management practices, ensure accountability, define data ownership and data quality standards across data assets for CIB.
  • You will cultivate a culture of data ownership throughout the data lifecycle, from creation to consumption, and leverage data for informed decision-making.

Job Description

Key accountabilities

  • Data Governance: Implement and maintain data governance frameworks, policies, standards, and procedures for CIB. Define and monitor data quality metrics, data lineage, data catalogues, and data dictionaries. Assign and track data roles and responsibilities, such as data owners, data stewards, and data consumers.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate data risks and issues, such as data breaches, data loss, data duplication, data inconsistency, and data quality errors. Conduct data impact assessments and data audits. Escalate and report data incidents and remediation actions.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant data regulations, such as BCBS 239, GDPR, POPIA, and FSCA. Implement and enforce data protection and privacy policies, such as data classification, data retention, data disposal, and data consent. Manage data requests and data sharing agreements.
  • Reporting: Produce and present data governance reports and dashboards, such as data quality scorecards, data lineage diagrams, data issue logs, and data governance maturity assessments. Provide data insights and recommendations to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Management: Engage and communicate with various stakeholders across CIB, such as business units, functions, data owners, data stewards, data consumers, and external parties. Build and maintain strong relationships and trust. Facilitate data governance forums and workshops.

Education and experience required.

  • Educated to degree level, ideally in a related field.
  • 5-8 years working on projects related to data governance, risk management, compliance, product control or information security.
  • Experience working as a Data Governance Lead/Manager.
  • Preferably involved in building the Data Governance capability in an organisation.
  • Desirable to have worked in a similar role in an investment or Commercial Bank.
