Description:

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Learning Assistant will contribute to the quality education of Casuarina Steiner School by assisting and supporting teachers with the enhancement of student learning and based on the philosophy of Steiner Education.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certificate III in Learning support or equivalent.
  • First aid certificate desirable.
  • Relevant Steiner Professional Learning.
  • Relevant KLA support training such as Social Thinking, MSL, and Numeracy Intervention.
  • Current NSW Working With Children Check clearance.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with children in a preschool or primary school.
  • Experience or training in working with students with learning differences and disabilities.
  • Experience in delivering numeracy and literacy interventions.

SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated sound personal qualities of tact, reliability, initiative and the ability to work with others as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all preschool and primary school-age children.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to learn quickly about classroom activities and procedures, specific support programs and use and maintenance of resources. This may include the keeping of anecdotal and specific records.
  • Commitment to serving as part of a team in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans.
  • Ability to conduct activities with children on an individual basis or with smaller groups to promote the development of physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative with students experiencing difficulties in the playground.
  • Ability to work with students with disabilities and implement relevant adjustments to support them.
  • Understanding of Work Health and Safety, Working with Children regulations, Code of conduct, Disability discrimination act and disability standards.
  • Computer literacy.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting students to follow and practice the establishment and maintenance of class routines.
  • Providing in class support for individual and small group work as directed by the teacher and/or the learning support coordinator.
  • Attending Individual Educational Planning meetings and provide input as required.
  • Assisting with the implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care programs.
  • Maintaining anecdotal and other records on student learning and/or behaviour for use in reviewing student development.
  • Supporting students in their development of adequate independence in work habits and readiness for learning.
  • Performing playground supervision duties.
  • Assisting teaching staff in the supervision of pupils on excursions and out of school education activities.
  • Contributing to the welfare, health and safety of students including administering first aid and medications under the direction of the teacher and in compliance with correct policies and procedures.
  • Displaying respect and empathy for students with high needs.
  • Displaying confidentiality, tact, reliability and sensitivity to students and their families.
  • Promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
  • Displaying an active interest in Steiner Education and its underlying principles.
  • Participating and assisting in whole school activities.
