About the role
The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the King’s Language Centre wish to appoint a Language Director in German for a fixed-term period of 12 months. The appointment will run from 1 August 2024. The successful candidate will have a strong record of German language teaching and experience of managing language programmes. They will be expected to:
- Convene the departmental German language modules for first, second and final year undergraduate degree students;
- Maintain excellent collaborative practices with the Language Centre’s German team;
- Teach, mark, and give feedback on German language modules;
- Oversee the German ab initio programme and work closely with language tutors in the King’s Lanaguage Centre to ensure successful delivery of the programme;
- Oversee the organisation of departmental German oral exams and be an examiner alongside other staff members in the Department;
- Update module materials for all German language modules convened, including module booklets and materials, virtual learning environment, and continual review of relevant resources;
- Manage and support the team of German language tutors dedicated to German language teaching in the department;
- Develop and support departmental outreach and recruitment activities, including working closely with marketing and admissions to staff and support Open Days, summer schools and applicant visits;
- Serve as appropriate on Departmental/Faculty/College committees and fulfil related administrative functions (e.g. attend the Department’s Student-Staff Liaison Committee; chair regular language tutor team meetings) and attend relevant meetings with the German language team in the Language Centre.

- To act as personal tutor to undergraduates
- To undertake administrative roles in the department
The postholder will be responsible to the Head of Department and the Head of the Language Centre.

About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Exceptional experience teaching German language at an HEI
- Proven excellent ability to teach translation from and into German at undergraduate level
- Native or near-native fluency in German and in English
- Excellent administrative skills
Desirable criteria
- Administrative experience
- Experience in student pastoral care
- Experience managing tutors on team-taught language modules
