Job Description
As we continue to grow and strengthen our Department, we are seeking to make an appointment, at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level, in the area of Digital Culture and Technology. Candidates will be striving to become scholars of international standing with a research and publication trajectory that illustrates this ambition. This post is an opportunity for a qualified individual to play a major role in shaping our vision of a diverse and innovative Department of Digital Humanities at one of the most prestigious universities in the UK.
We are seeking candidates with a strong research profile in one or more areas of digital culture and technology. We particularly welcome applications from candidates carrying out research in the fields of Games Studies and/or User Experience (UX), as well as other areas of Digital Humanities that go beyond the text to embrace images, networks, maps and other forms of visual and sensory data. Candidates with an interest in linking theoretical approaches with forms of digital practice, policy, civic engagement, or industry work, would be particularly welcome, as well as those who can bring global/non-UK perspectives to our research portfolio and curricula.
Key responsibilities of the role are to deliver high-quality research and education, to contribute to the future development of the department, and to participate in a supportive, collegiate culture. There will be opportunities to be responsible for aspects of departmental administration. Mentorship will be provided to enable the postholder to gain experience and develop professionally.
The postholder will be encouraged to develop their own research interests, to secure research funding through grants, to develop collaborative links within academia and industry, and to participate in the activities of one or more of our Faculty centres or research groups: King’s AI Institute, Digital Futures Institute, Centre for Attention Studies, Creative AI Lab, Centre for Digital Culture, Global Digital Cultures Research Group, Queer Research Cluster, or Computational Humanities Research Group.
The role holder will enhance the education and experiences of our students, both for our fast-expanding MA/MSc programmes and the BA in Digital Media and Culture, teaching engaging, up-to-date courses and contributing to the development of our curricula and teaching methods.
In particular, the role holder will be expected to contribute to our forthcoming (from September 2024) online Master’s programmes in Digital Economy and Digital Futures, which are expected to recruit globally, but with a particular focus on South-East Asia. Research interests in the digital culture of this region would thus also be desirable.
We particularly welcome applications from members of under-represented communities, and from those who are willing to contribute to our ongoing conversations about reducing inequality at King’s.
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.
This is a full-time post.
Key responsibilities
Undertake a programme of original research at a level commensurate with international standards.
Enhance the research profile of the Department by producing high-quality publications and conference presentations.
Sustain research activity through a portfolio of individual or collaborative research projects.
Pursue research funding through grant applications to Research Councils and other bodies.
Contribute to future external Research Excellence Framework evaluations (or equivalent).
Seek continued involvement in international research activities, such as conferences and academic journals.
Contribute to the teaching, project supervision, assessment/marking, and administration of postgraduate and undergraduate degrees in the Department of Digital Humanities, both in-person and online.
Fulfil the Department’s and Faculty’s ethos of translating their own research into the design and delivery of high-quality teaching modules, including, where appropriate, practice-led activities.
Undertake supervision of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students.
Develop links, collaborations and networks with academics, both within King’s and externally, as well as with other relevant institutions (such as cultural heritage organisations or NGOs).
Disseminate their research through knowledge transfer, outreach, etc.
Contribute fully and conscientiously to administrative and leadership tasks in the Department of Digital Humanities, as directed by the Head of Department.
Undertake pastoral support of students, including personal tutoring.
Engage in continuing professional development, as appropriate.
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

  • Ability to develop (Grade 8) or contribute to (Grade 6-7) research funding grants.
  • Experience of effective teaching, assessment and student supervision at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and for a multi-cultural audience.
  • Experience of developing new modules (Grade 8).
  • Knowledge of contemporary pedagogic approaches in HE, and the ability to apply these to develop innovative learning materials and teaching methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with a range of audiences, including students, academic and professional services colleagues, and cultural and industry partners.
