LEGAL COUNSEL – AUSTRALIA

We are seeking an experienced Legal Counsel specialising in insurance law to join our team in Australia. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in insurance law and regulations, with a thorough understanding of the legal landscape in the Australian insurance industry.

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Provide expert legal advice and support to our underwriting business partners on a wide range of insurance-related legal issues including insurance policy wordings, reinsurance agreements, contract construction, and risk assessment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional business partners, including senior management, HR, claims, compliance, finance and risk teams, to provide legal guidance and support on strategic initiatives and business operations.
  • Stay informed with changes in insurance legislation and regulations in Australia, ensuring that our business partners are fully informed of the changes, and supported in any changes that are required to be made.
  • Manage and coordinate external legal counsel when necessary, and oversee legal proceedings and litigation related to insurance matters involving the company.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support decision-making and provide timely and accurate advice to the company on insurance-related matters.
  • Support projects run by our Global Legal team at a local level.

You will report directly to our General Counsel, Australia.

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:

  • Qualified lawyer admitted to practice in Australia with a minimum of 4 years’ post qualification experience, ideally within an insurance company, insurance agency or brokerage.
  • Proven experience in insurance law, with a strong understanding of insurance contracts, policy wording, claims handling, and regulatory compliance specific to the Australian insurance industry.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, with a proactive and solution-oriented approach to legal challenges in the insurance sector.
  • Intellectual curiosity, with an ability to consider and approach challenges from all angles and with a diverse and open-minded approach.
