Responsibilities:

OVERALL PURPOSE

The Library is at the heart of the school’s resources. The Library plays a pro-active and essential role in supporting the curriculum and research as well as promoting independent learning, literacy and a love of reading. The Library’s collections also support the strategic aims of the school: Explore, Express and Excel. The main library houses approximately 13,000 books. The Library also provides access to a collection of e-books and audiobooks as well as a range of selected online resources such as JSTOR which support academic study. The library catalogue is centrally networked and there is an emphasis on providing what pupils and staff need as quickly as possible, whether the material required is academic or recreational.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote and develop reading, literacy and information literacy skills throughout the school by:
  • Managing the Library to ensure the provision of an effective resource and information service to pupils, staff and other members of the wider school community.
  • Liaising with Heads of Department and the Senior Leadership Team to ensure appropriate provision of resource and IT material in all relevant academic areas.
  • Maintaining and improving the school’s digital information resources, including the online video collection, Canford Media provided by Planet eStream, and the e-book and audiobook collection provided by OverDrive.
  • Educating all library users in relevant information literacy and library skills.
  • Developing a positive culture, in conjunction with the Heads of Department, for books and reading.
  • Maintain and promote the selection of books and other printed resources, audiovisual and electronic resources held by the Library.
  • Maintain an orderly study environment for curriculum-based and independent learning.
  • Maintain and develop the Library Management System (Oliver).
  • Advise Heads of Department and Senior Leadership Team on policies for the appropriate provision of resources in the Library.
  • Work with Heads of Department on the organisation of the subject pages on the school’s Learning Gateway and manage the library-specific pages.
  • Participate in the wider academic community of the school. Provide support for academic initiatives, such as Theme Weeks and other activities.
  • Manage, lead and take responsibility for the library staff to ensure optimum use of library opening hours.
  • Manage the library budget.
  • Undertake such duties as may be required by the Deputy Head Academic or other members of the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the continuing development of the Library.
