Description:
This position will provide support to the AISC Librarian in a variety of advanced and technical capacities consistent with support for a special library and academic functions with a variety of collections in multiple components with digital, archival, and discoverability components . The advanced Library Assistant will provide high level reference desk and circulation desk outreach and will provide patron support and instruction as designed and supervised by librarian. Will provide stacks maintenance, collection maintenance, and collection development support to the librarian, as well as perform archival collection processing and maintenance at a high degree of proficiency and familiarity with the current protocols and issues in Native communities. Incumbent may also do technical work in AISC related grant projects especially those with CMS or other forms of digital collections work. The Library Assistant will work closely with the AISC Librarian and may work on project work supporting the project manager, digital archivists, and librarians at UCLA Institute of American Culture Center (IAC) to support the Archiving the Age of Mass Incarceration grant project.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 years Working with archives, special collections, or reference and research collections in subject areas surrounding American Indian Studies (AIS), Indigenous Studies, Tribal and/or cultural collections (Required)
- 2 years Graduate level course work in or comparable career experience relating to data sovereignty, traditional knowledge labels, Indigenous knowledge and organization systems, and special considerations in r (Required)
- Experience working in archives or researching in archives especially working with ephemera, oral histories, or digital objects (Preferred)
- Knowledge of a Native language, or awareness of language matters/issues in collections and best practices pertaining to Native and Indigenous collections. (Preferred)
- Advanced knowledge of facets, metadata, and features adaptable to Tribal needs, like Mukurtu (Required)
- Possesses advanced training in other archive like ArchivesSpace with AIS collection expertise (Required)
- Higher level paraprofessional knowledge of reference, circulation, and collection management tasks to independently performed public services, reference, and research support for faculty, students, and other patrons (LA II level) in a special or academic library with supervision by the librarian (Required)
- Collection Development experience allowing independent assessment of monographic, serial, archival, or ephemeral candidates for incorporation into the collection based on niche subject expertise that the Librarian and LA II have consulted on as an area for cultivation reflecting the LA’s subject exp (Required)
- Higher level description and metadata support work: copy cataloging, cataloging preparation, archival accessioning and description,and donor collection accessioning support exercising judgment at key stages of collection preparation. (Required)
- Support in library instruction, student orientation, and exhibit and programing support with supervision but at times independently executed. (Required)
- Exhibit and programming support requiring technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: curation, preparator/installation work, event coordination, Native Contemporary Art. (Required)
EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & PERSONAL AFFILIATIONS
- Other Type of Degree A Masters in Library and Information Sciences degree (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or comparable education or work experience (Preferred)
