Job Description:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Borrower Services and Library Operations, the Library Assistant is the primary point of contact for library users for general inquiries, reference assistance, library material distribution, and audio-visual equipment use. The incumbent provides responsive and knowledgeable customer service to assist users in using the Library and finding relevant library materials, and supports users through demonstrations, orientations, and troubleshooting. The Library Assistant provides training and acts as operational liaison to tutors and subject coordinators in the Writing and Tutoring Centre of the Learning Commons. In support of collection access and management including the Reserve collection, the incumbent performs bibliographic searching, manages print and digital materials, and conducts inventory.
Qualifications Required:

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of 2-year Library Technician diploma program.
  • One (1) year of related library experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Sound knowledge of standard library organization, policies, regulations and procedures.
  • Experience in providing responsive customer service interactions, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Experience using an integrated library system, preferably Sierra or similar.
  • Experience performing bibliographic searching.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge in the use of computer applications, including web publishing, word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic communication.
  • Experience with public speaking and conducting orientations, an asset.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills with the ability to express ideas clearly in writing or in person.
  • Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to handle potentially difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and co-workers, and to deal patiently, tactfully and effectively with students and other library users.
  • Excellent internet research and database search skills.
  • Ability to conduct reference interviews and refer questions to a librarian or reference assistant as appropriate.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and challenging environment, solve problems as they occur, and make thoughtful and timely decisions.
  • Effective troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to provide basic technical training and orientations to students, faculty, and other non-technical users.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply department and college rules, policies, and technical materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to details and enter information accurately.
  • Strong clerical aptitude, including good keyboarding skills with a minimum of 40 wpm.
  • Ability to lift and shelve books, move book trucks, and stand at the circulation counter for several hours at a time.
