DEPARTMENT OF INDIGENOUS STUDIES, LAW & SOCIAL JUSTICE

The Department of Indigenous Studies, Law & Social Justice at Wilfrid Laurier University invites applications for a Limited Term Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Law & Society beginning August 1, 2024, subject to budgetary approval.
Law & Society is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program rooted in social scientific, interpretive, critical and historical analyses of law across multiple historical contexts. A sociolegal approach to Western law looks beyond authorized texts and formal institutions; it recognizes that legality exists in the consciousness and practices of people(s) touched by the law, in the process of making claims for justice, and in the coercive power embedded in social ordering. Law & Society also highlights resistance to Western law, and alternatives to formal law in structuring social relations.
The Law & Society program is seeking candidates for a 12-month Limited Term Appointment, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Successful candidates will be expected to teach two of the program’s required courses: Introduction to Sociolegal Theories (LY 101) and Introduction to the Canadian Legal System (LY 201), as well as three elective courses offered by the program. Candidates will have an active research agenda and be expected to demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment. They will have completed, or be close to completing, a Ph.D. in law or a related discipline, such as sociology, political science, history or philosophy or have equivalent qualifications (either a law or master’s degree with a substantial record of professional or community experience).
Aligned with Laurier’s Action Plan for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Indigeneity (https://www.wlu.ca/about/discover-laurier/equity-diversity-and-inclusion/index.html), the Law & Society program is strongly committed to the principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in our hiring process and we strongly encourage applications from candidates from diverse and equity-deserving groups to apply.

Applicants should submit:

  • a cover letter.
  • curriculum vitae.
  • a brief teaching portfolio (including a short statement of teaching philosophy, a sample of relevant course outlines, and any evidence of teaching effectiveness).
  • A short statement of research interests/expertise.
  • A sample of writing.
  • the names and contact information for three referees (at least two of which should be academic).

Applications should be addressed to Dr. Keri Cheechoo, Chair of the Indigenous Studies, Law & Social Justice Department, c/o Celine Taillefer-Travers, Academic Program Assistant, and submitted electronically to ctravers@wlu.ca. Applications received by July 2, 2024 are guaranteed consideration, but the position will remain open until filled.
