LIMITED TERM CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR, INDIGENOUS/XWULMUXW STUDIES (1 OF 2)

The Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies Department (formerly the First Nations Studies Department) at Vancouver Island University is founded on - and guided by - important principles that emphasize the significance of Indigenous knowledges in teaching and learning within the program, reciprocal and respectful relationships with local Indigenous communities, local Elders as teachers and guides in the classroom for faculty and students, and inclusivity as the basis for all programming. The Department is committed to combining excellence in academic practice with Indigenous ways of knowing and being in order to provide students with a culturally responsive and ethical educational experience, as well as opportunities for personal growth.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with technology relevant to the position.

  • PhD degree in Indigenous Studies or a related discipline from an accredited institution.

Responsibilities:

The Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies Department is seeking a candidate to teach in the 2024-2025 academic year.
The position is full-time, comprised of eight courses over the Fall and Spring semesters.
In the Fall, the successful candidate will teach three sections of INDG 103 (Introduction to Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies I) offered as fully online asynchronous courses and one section of INDG 103, synchronous online, with a set schedule. In the Spring, the successful candidate will teach three sections of INDG 104 (Introduction to Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies II, with a focus on coastal British Columbia), offered as fully online asynchronous courses and one section of INDG 104, synchronous online, with a set schedule.
The successful candidate is expected to participate in departmental meetings and planning.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
