JOB SUMMARY:

This is a rotational programme for Locally Employed Doctors to have the opportunity to work in a variety of surgical specialties over a 12-month period. This post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for core training or specialist ST3+ programmes. You will work on the F2/CST tier and as such be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to this level. You will participate in the emergency and elective care of patients within the firm including ward, theatre and outpatient clinics, This post allows for a significant period of self-directed study time.
You will be allocated 3 rotations in either Trauma & Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, or ENT, spending 4 months in each rotation, with the opportunity for up to an additional 12 month extension in your chosen specialty listed above. Alternatively, the rotations can be split into 6 month duration in either ENT or Trauma & Orthopaedics
We know the importance of supported learning opportunities and are proud of the encouraging environment that our team cultivates – we promise departmental teaching, Audit/Mortality and Morbidity/MDT meetings, grand rounds and journal clubs as well as allocated lunchtime training for locally employed doctors and study leave. We will support you with building your portfolio, engaging with HORUS/ISCP and involvement in audits and QI projects. We have an excellent record of junior doctors progressing on to formal training programmes. We have an active research unit, working in partnership with the University of Portsmouth, and currently have a number of projects developed by our junior colleagues achieving presentation and publication. You will have the opportunity to be involved in this and will have the opportunity to present at regional, national and international meetings. There is the opportunity to be involved in and run peer-to-peer teaching sessions.

The basic salary is aligned to the corresponding nodal points associated with the national Doctors and Dentists in Training Terms and Conditions (England) 2016. Providing you have evidence of passing the foundation programme, or equivalent 2-year training programme with NHS experience and the CREST form signed off, the basic salary will be MT03 (nodal point 3, £43,923). If you do not have previous NHS experience and are selected for the above post you will be given a 4 weeks supernumerary post (paid) to help with the adjustment period and placed on the MT02 pay grade (nodal point 2, £37,303 ) for 6 months, with encouragement and support to complete your CREST form, a nationally accepted competency sign off. There will be pay enhancements where the post contributes to the on-call rota. This post is new deal and EWTD compliant.

EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrable skills and minimum of 6 months experience within an appropriate specialty
  • NHS experience would be desirable
  • Evidence of commitment to a career in surgery

Responsibilities:

  • To work as a junior doctor, alongside nursing and allied health professional colleagues and senior medics to provide a safe clinical environment for the patients and visitors to the Trust.
  • Communicate professionally and appropriately with nurses, allied health professionals, patients, relatives and all other medical staff.
  • Take part in rostered out of normal hours work when orientation complete and competence assessed.
  • Proactively and positively contribute to the successful overall performance of the Trust.
