Locum Consultant Hepatologist

The post will be based at King’s College Hospital and the proposed Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 8.5* Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional activities related to professional revalidation. The On-Call commitment is for a 1:7 rota which is classed as Category A. The post will contribute to the portal hypertension on call rota.

• Following work undertaken to transform the way clinical care is delivered at King’s, all new consultant appointments will comprise 1.5 SPAs. 1 SPA is for activities relevant for appraisal and revalidation. 0.5 SPA is for particular interests such as Research or Teaching.

As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.

The appointee will be expected to develop a research activity either in basic sciences or clinical hepatology and teaching. The post-holder will be based at King’s College Hospital/KHP. Office space and secretarial support will be provided at King’s College Hospital.

1. To provide effective leadership of all staff engaged in the speciality.
2. To provide paediatric advice to the Trusts on the basis of agreed protocols
3. To provide outpatient services in paediatrics gastroenterology and develop liaison services in the region
4. Take part in combined paediatric gastroenterology, clinics and ward rounds
5. Liaise closely with adult gastroenterology services in both Trusts.
6. Clinical responsibility for patients allowing for proper delegation to and training of staff
In relation to clinical work, the successful candidate will be expected to:
1. Undertake all work in according with the King’s College Hospital NHS Trust procedures and operating policies
2. Conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of the business plan
3. Maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the speciality, care group, division and Trust.
4. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
5. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
6. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
7. To contribute to the Audit Programme.
8. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
9. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Paediatric Gastroenterology services.
10. To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
11. To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
12. To undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Clinical Director.
13. To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
14. To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
15. To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety
