This is an exciting opportunity for a Paediatric Emergency Medicine physician or Acute Paediatrician to join the Children’s Emergency Department team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, working with us towards our goal of providing world class emergency care to the children and young people of Coventry and Warwickshire. Our team is dedicated, enthusiastic and committed to continuously improving our service and we are looking for somebody who will join us in this aim.
The Children’s Emergency Department at UHCW is co-located with the Adult ED and the team work closely with our Adult ED and Paediatric colleagues to provide single front door access to approximately 38,000 acutely unwell or injured children and young people every year.
This is an exciting time for CED at UHCW. We are proud of the service that we offer our patients, but we recognise the need to change and adapt as the demands of EM change. In September 2023 we completed a significant expansion providing us with the space and facilities appropriate to the demands of a busy, forward looking CED.

The main aim of this post is to work with other senior medical and nursing staff to support in delivering a first-class children’s emergency medicine service for the Coventry and Rugby area at University Hospital, Coventry. This will involve supervision and support of juniors so that services are provided in an effective and efficient manner.

Responsibilities:

Take responsibility for and provide high quality, evidence-based treatment to patients under his/her care
Participate in the development of the Children’s Emergency Medicine service including developing relevant treatment protocols and guidelines and working towards greater knowledge of the management of paediatric emergency medical conditions.
Work towards the department ambition of providing paediatric EM subspecialty training at UHCW.
Ensure own practice is up-to-date. This will involve taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Review system.
Ensure that all Trust-wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come into contact with services provided by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust

Teaching
The postholder will be required to participate fully in the education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, paramedical, nursing and other appropriate staff. Providing honest and constructive feedback in a supportive learning environment, teaching by example and encouraging trainees to be curious.
Our links to Warwick Medical School provide excellent opportunities for greater involvement in teaching in many different areas of the undergraduate curriculum. There is a well-staffed and recently expanded junior tier of clinical fellows, all of whom receive CPD time to assist with service development and quality improvement.
The Trust runs provider courses for EPALS and the European Trauma Course and the post-holder would be encouraged to become involved with this. The department runs numerous other courses, including ultrasound, trauma team leadership, cadaveric surgical skills courses, pre-hospital medicine events, and critical appraisal.
We have a strong programme of simulation training as described above and the successful candidate would be encouraged to join the simulation faculty and further develop these sessions.
Clinical Governance
The Trust is committed to providing patient care of the highest quality. Job plans are constructed to allow practical sessional commitment for medical audit, clinical governance and continuing medical education. The post holder will be required to participate in clinical audit activities including contributing to the monthly ED QIPS meetings (and Paediatric QIPS meetings where appropriate), which are the formal meetings for presentation and discussion of clinical governance and quality improvement.
The postholder will have an objective team approach to and participation in the specialties efforts to monitor and improve standards and critical incident whilst actively supporting evidence-based guideline implementation.
Research
The ED team have broad research interests, are actively involved in several quantitative and qualitative research projects, and are working to increase funding for dedicated research roles. We employ two ED research nurses, have been leading recruiters to several multi-centre trials including CRASH-3 and HALT-IT, and are keen to support and develop PEM-related research.
Continual Professional Development (CPD)
Attention and aspiration to lifelong learning will be supported by the specialty group and the Trust to demonstrate safe and knowledge clinical capabilities.
The post holder will have a reflective approach to their own practice and will agree a programme of continuing professional development which meets his/her and service provision requirements.
Completion of a revalidation ready appraisal annually and undertaking multisource feedback at least once every five years in order to meet the requirements for revalidation.

Undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of clinical areas. Lead and manage the team through adaptable, visible and modest leadership to ensure a committed approach is achieved.
