Job overview
The successful applicant will support the orthopaedic trauma & elective service. The successful candidate will take part in the 1 in 12 orthopaedic trauma rotas at Royal Oldham Hospital Care Organisation and also undertake elective hand & wrist surgery there and at Rochdale Infirmary.
The weekly program is an average 10 sessions, which include clinics, theatres, direct clinical care, on calls and supporting clinical activities (SPA’s).
The consultant job plan will be subject to review during the initial six-month period. The successful candidate will thus need to be flexible in order to allow for capacity and demand to be managed. A detailed job plan will be available for discussion.
This consultant post will be part of a team of 13 orthopaedic consultants but also part of a wider Trauma, Orthopaedic and Plastics department across the NCA of 48 consultants.
The successful candidate will be fellowship trained in Trauma / Lower Limb upon starting the post, adding to, and complementing the existing members of the department.
The Northern Care Alliance will be the employer for the appointment and will issue the contract of employment. Candidates who are unable, for personal reasons, to work full time are eligible to apply and, if successful, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with the Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics.
Main duties of the job
As part of the trauma unit at Oldham, you will cover dedicated on-calls and trauma lists on a 1 in 12 rota of weekdays and weekends.
Fracture clinics will be undertaken at the Royal Oldham Hospital where there is dedicated support from plaster technicians, occupational therapists and other essential allied health practitioners. There will be both middle grade and junior doctor level support from both North West deanary trainees and Trust appointed doctors. Radiology support is provided

All consultants will be allocated 1 core SPA per week for professional development (CPD), Job Planning, Appraisal, Mandatory Training, attendance at regular team meetings which will have a clinical governance aspect and particoptaing in Audit. Additional SPA time will be made available to Consultants on the basis of evidence need.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • • FRCS or equivalent • Completion of CCST/higher specialist training or equivalent in orthopaedics. • Logbook evidence of Trauma and Lower Limb Surgery.

Desirable criteria

  • Higher Degree (e.g. – MD, PHD, MSc). • Publications and research in the field of Trauma Surgery. • Fellowship training in Trauma / Hand & Wrist Surgery.

Professional Registration

Essential criteria

  • • Inclusion on the Specialist Register / Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview. • Full registration with the General Medical Council. • Licensed with the GMC.

Desirable criteria

  • • Membership of BOA. • Membership of Specialist society.

Knowledge, training and experience

Essential criteria

  • • Clinical experience and expertise in Hand & Wrist and Trauma Surgery. • Clinical experience in trauma management and damage control Orthopaedic surgery. • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development and keeping up to date with medical advances. • Knowledge and appreciation of the core legal, ethical, and political issues which govern medical practice. • Experience of recent and current research/relevant publications. • Postgraduate teaching and training at local, regional, and national level.

Desirable criteria

  • • Specialist training in complex Hand & Wrist Trauma surgery. • Participation in Educational Supervision Course/ Clinical Supervision Course. • Evidence of participation in related clinical research. • Evidence of participation in relevant audit. • Evidence of participation in teaching/training.
