Job Description
Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Locum Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine to join us on a fixed term basis for 12-months.
The post offers an exciting opportunity for either a recently trained or established respiratory consultant to gain expertise and / or develop a sub-specialty service within our busy and visionary department.
The successful applicant will work within the Respiratory team based at QA Hospital in Portsmouth. There will be opportunities within a variety of Respiratory sub-specialities, to be negotiated based on clinician preference alongside service requirements. The successful applicant would also participate in the inpatient management of respiratory patients and general medical patients, including participating in the on call rota.
The successful applicant would also be expected to undertake inpatient work covering the three respiratory wards and respiratory high care unit along with undertaking reviews of respiratory patients on the admissions unit. Job plans will be negotiated with the successful applicant, but the expectation is that ward cover will be provided for 14 weeks of the year with additional sessions reviewing respiratory patients on the admissions unit.
They would also be expected to participate on the respiratory and general medical on call rotas which is currently 1:19. The successful applicant would undertake a range of duties including advice and guidance to both the community and the hospital along with delivering two outpatient clinics per week. The successful applicant would be involved in delivering respiratory procedures such as bronchoscopy and pleural procedures in their off-ward time. Each respiratory consultant provides weekend cover for 4 weekends per year plus an additional day for bank holiday cover.
Portsmouth Hospital University Trust has many trainees, and the successful applicant would be expected to undertake supervision and education for members of the wider multidisciplinary team. This would be included in the time for supporting professional activities (SPA) for which there will be 2 session per week with 8 sessions delivering clinical care.
Job Description
Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice at time of interview
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Register for Respiratory and G(I)M via:
  • CCT (expected CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • CESR or European Community Rights

Desirable

  • Higher degree or diploma in relevant clinical, research, educational or managerial subject.
  • Prizes and honours.
  • ALS training – current
  • Completed Educational Supervisor training.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Leading G(I)M “acute take”
  • Acute respiratory work
  • Respiratory High Care Unit work
  • Chest Clinic work

CLINICAL SKILLS

Essential

  • Bronchoscopy, chest drain and pleural aspiration skills to “competency” (if the successful candidate wishes to participate in the procedures rota)
  • Respiratory physiology - clinical experience
  • Understanding of clinical risk management.

Desirable

  • Experience of thoracic ultrasound, level 1 or 2 certification

KNOWLEDGE

  • Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Knowledge and use of evidence based practice
  • IT skills
  • Effective, confident presentation ability
  • Experience in and outside speciality
  • Record of organisation experience e.g. Rotas, Specialist meetings, undergraduate or postgraduate examinations
