Job Summary:
Santa Monica Seafood (SMS) is hiring a logistics supervisor to oversee Northern California operations from our Hayward facility. The logistics supervisor is responsible for maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient deliveries of boxed fresh and frozen seafood to our customers in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento area. The supervisor will manage a team of class C delivery drivers, a fleet of box trucks and cargo vans, and work with supporting business and logistics systems to process requests and view operations. This is a high-profile role that supports our growing presence in Northern California.

DESIRED BACKGROUND / REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3-5 years commercial driving or warehouse / distribution experience and 2+ years managing or supervising drivers or other front-line, non-exempt logistics employees
  • Excellent geographic knowledge of the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento area
  • Very reliable with strong sense of ownership and responsibility
  • Experience in food, perishables or refrigerated logistics or delivery
  • Experience using Microsoft Office or equivalent business software
  • Experience using fleet routing and truck tracking and video safety tools
  • Hold an associate or bachelor’s degree or working towards similar education
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lbs. with or without material handling equipment or help from other persons

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise a team of class C / non-CDL delivery drivers
    o Hire and train drivers
    o Compose and manage driver schedules; audit and approve timecards; review and approve paid time-off requests (PTO) for sick and vacation time
    o Coach, mentor and discipline drivers on SMS performance expectations and good driving habits; communicate frequently with drivers during regular per-shift driver meetings and while drivers are en-route as necessary; maintain a great working environment and recognize drivers for good work
    o Address driver safety behaviors and incidents; utilize fleet in-cab cameras to review footage; reward, coach or discipline drivers for safety infractions as directed by logistics management
    o Comply with and enforce California law on driver meal breaks and paid rest periods

o Terminate drivers in certain circumstances under direction from logistics management and Human Resources

  • Manage a fleet of refrigerated delivery box trucks and cargo vans

o Ensure vehicle and reefer units are roadworthy and maintained properly
o Ensure trucks are kept clean inside the truck box, in the cab, and on truck exteriors
o Follow FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) procedures to ensure trucks are clean, free of damage and pre-cooled prior to loading
o Ensure drivers fuel their trucks at fuel card stations or retail stations, as directed by logistics management

o Ensure drivers complete their daily pre-trip and post-trip DVIR’s in driver phones, and that drivers provide visibility to truck items that require maintenance or repair; coordinate with vehicle leasing companies for any needed repairs; and acquire substitute or rental trucks to service routes while leased trucks are repaired

  • Maintain safe, reliable, and efficient delivery operations

o Oversee unloading of transfer truck in the morning and cross-dock or orders from transfer truck to delivery trucks and vans
o Ensure drivers have the tools and equipment to perform their job successfully including uniforms, in-cab phone mounts, dollies / hand trucks and other equipment as well as correct paperwork such as invoices to confirm customer receipt
o Consolidate or rearrange routes if necessary due to driver callouts
o Drive a van or small box truck at least 1x per week and from time-to-time to deliver packages due to drivers reporting sickness, vacation, or unplanned staffing shortages
o Manage will calls or customer pick-ups at our facility
o Ensure product returns are placed safely into cooler or freezer; credit customer for returned product if authorized by SMS management

o Arrange and load periodic transfers of returned product, stacked pallets, and other material back to our Rancho Dominguez, CA location

  • Utilize and maintain business and logistics systems

o Utilize business and routing systems to adjust daily routes and sequence customer deliveries to ensure efficient routes that meet customer delivery windows
o Dispatch route sequences to driver phones
o Capture customer delivery information by recording it in our routing system, including locations, parking, access / egress, dock availability, noise restrictions, key drops, frequent requests and other items
o Incorporate knowledge of holidays, special events, major traffic accidents and weather into running a reliable operation

o Install and order replacement telematics equipment including fleet tracking and temperature monitoring devices and in-cab video cameras

  • Maintain clean and well-functioning office, warehouse, dock and yard areas
  • Maintain good communication with customers and internal departments

o Establish positive relationships with customers through good communication and service; address customer concerns when they arise
o Maintain good communication and responsiveness with SMS sales account executives and other SMS team members within and outside of Logistics

o Report competitive intelligence involving customers or other food companies delivering fresh and frozen seafood in our service area

  • Safety and operations performance

o Track and improve metrics for safety, costs, overtime, turnover, on-time delivery and cross-dock efficiency

o Identify and implement opportunities to improve logistics processes and workflows

  • Travel to SMS headquarters in Rancho Dominguez, CA at least once annually for training and to build relationships with other logistics team members
