Description:

United Way of Broward County fights for the Health, Education and Financial Prosperity of EVERY person in our community.
General Description: In collaboration with the Major Gifts team, the Major Gifts Officer (MGO) will be responsible for helping United Way of Broward County (UWBC) reach its fundraising goals by identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts. MGO will work closely with the Director, Major Gifts (DMG) to cultivate donors and prospects within the Major Gifts revenue streams: transformational giving, major gifts of $10k plus, planned giving, foundations, and capital campaign. In addition, the MGO will develop strong Donor Relations through individual and collective outreach, communication, and events to ensure retention and promote increased giving. Responsibilities will also include supporting the coordination and leadership of the Major Gift and Legacy committees. A portfolio of major gift donors and prospects must be individually maintained.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree or advanced certification such as CFRE preferred)
  • 3-5 years of experience in development, advancement, or fundraising, with demonstrated success in nonprofit.
  • Ability to set goals strategically and oversee execution.
  • High level of discretion and ethical approach to fundraising.
  • Proven ability to interact and influence philanthropic leaders.
  • Experience motivating and managing high-profile volunteer leadership and senior executives.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with various internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in database management, Microsoft Office Suite, and other computer skills, as required.

    Environment & Physical Demands: The environment is climate controlled (i.e., heated and air-conditioned). Lighting is adequate through overhead lighting as well as windows and blinds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Physical demands include sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, bending, lifting approximately 25 pounds, regular use of the telephone, copier, fax and computer, and occasionally driving the United Way vehicle. Responsibilities:

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Implement overall Major Gifts strategy developed by DMG.
  • Identify, engage and re-engage donors, particularly those emerging as the next generation of potential philanthropic leaders.
  • Conduct individually tailored, one-on-one cultivation and solicitation meetings and work with appropriate volunteers to strategize and manage their cultivation and solicitation of targeted donors.
  • Identify and solicit new major gifts.
  • Connect United Way Staff and Board of Directors to new and/or prospective Tocqueville Society members.
  • Cultivate, steward and build trusted relationships with a portfolio of major donors and prospective major donors and legacy giving prospects to generate new and increased giving.
  • Effectively develop, organize, manage, support and motivate a volunteer team to aid in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of high capacity donors and prospective donors.
  • Partner with Major Gift and Development colleagues, for identification of prospects
  • Develop meaningful ways to engage major gift donors and prospects throughout the year including personal visits, executing unique events and volunteer opportunities to connect our members to the work United Way is doing in Broward County.
  • Create and implement a stewardship and recognition plan, including thanking donors, events and leadership registry.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:

  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials, and uses judgment and tact in dealing with internal and external inquiries.
  • Understand the United Way of Broward concept, mission, purpose, philosophy and background to handle routine calls from public in an effective and diplomatic way.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with staff, board members, major donors, volunteers, agency representatives, and guests of the DMG.
  • Plans and prioritizes work to meet scheduled deadlines; adjusts personal schedule to assure completion of tasks, assignments, etc.
  • Works only under general supervision; uses discretion and judgment in the performance of daily duties.
  • Exhibits leadership and initiative in work habits and adhering to UWBC policies.
  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the DMG.
  • Due to the leadership role United Way is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization’s crisis plan and response efforts.
