While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop and kneel, or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee must be able to climb to gain access to various pieces of equipment; this includes working with hand and power tools when necessary. The employee occasionally is required to work at elevated heights using personal protective equipment when required. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. The employee must be able to operate an automobile and travel by airplane. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of injury due to exposure to an office environment, such as computer work. The employee is regularly exposed to work related travel conditions and hazards, including automobile and airline travel. Travel may occur outside normal working hours. The employee is also frequently exposed to a shop and warehouse environment and asphalt plant environment. The employee is occasionally exposed to inclement weather conditions and will be in the vicinity of moving equipment and operating machinery. The employee will occasionally be in areas where toxic or caustic chemicals are utilized and where noise levels exist that may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Responsibilities:

Key Activities & Responsibilities

  • Directs a team of Design Drafting Supervisors who oversee product specific Design Drafters, Designers and/or Engineers.
  • Responsible for meeting design drawing release schedules to satisfy production schedules and overall project delivery milestones.
  • Models and promotes effective communication and engagement amongst internal and external teams to ensure project success.
  • Prepares, communicates, and monitors individual and group workloads to optimize and adhere to project schedules balancing engineering production capacity.
  • Ensures project specifications are followed within the framework of global best practices, standard operating procedures, and design standards to successfully meet all internal and external customer requirements.
  • Occasional travel, domestic and international, to customer current and proposed project sites to evaluate project feasibility, requirements, and constraints in support of sales activities.
  • Inspires, mentors, grows, and develops engineering talent while providing vision and direction for the engineering team.
  • Manages, directs, and monitors effective usage of outsourced and insourced de-localized engineering, design, and design drafting resources.
  • Holds the Production Engineering Team accountable for Astec Core Values, strategic plan performance, budget performance, quality performance and schedule performance.
  • Provides status reports to the Director of Engineering for upcoming, current, and completed projects

To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field or equivalent and/or combination of training and experience.
  • 8 years of progressive project, product, and team leadership roles in engineering-related positions and fields.
  • Proficient in the use of SolidWorks/AutoCAD (or equivalent) to generate 3D solid model designs and 2D equipment layouts for the purposes of design review and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with industry policies and procedures and design standards to ensure safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance.
  • Must possess in-depth understanding in one or more engineering fields (i.e., electrical, structural, civil, mechanical) and applicable design criteria.
  • Detailed knowledge of hot mix asphalt production equipment and related and/or adjacent systems and components, component interactions and design interdependencies.
  • Thorough working knowledge of plant engineering, industrial engineering, and tooling.
  • Superb oral and written communication skills
