Serves as the supervisor of Environmental Health and Safety programs at UPMC locations. Additionally, manage safety programs at other serviced facilities including the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, the Physician Division, UPMC Southside and Magee Womens Hospital. Ensure the completion of the department’s responsibilities as well as the delivery of all services in a professional, timely and cost-effective manner, through direct supervision of EH&S staff. Provide direction to the following positions: Safety Office Coordinator; Lead Safety Specialist and Safety Specialists.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. degree in a Safety Sciences or Safety Engineering preferred.
  • 3 years of experience in environmental health and safety (preferably in a health care facility)

    OR

  • Associates of Safety Engineering with 5 years of healthcare experience is required.

  • Education and/or experience, to manage and operate a multi-facility health care safety program.
  • Master’s degree in one of the related management areas preferred.
  • Familiarity with Hospital administrative functions.
  • Understanding of human relations and behavior concepts and experience in dealing with Human Resource and Labor Relations regulations and policies.
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience in managing multiple responsibilities and delegation and assignment of duties is required.
  • Ability to cooperate and interact with all levels of Hospital staff and customers; As such, often the sole contact with the areas outside the department and must promote a professional and service-oriented image at all times.LICENSURE, CERTIFICATIONS, AND CLEARANCES:

Responsibilities:

  • Develops, implementation and supervision of safety policies and programs aimed at improving the protection of Hospital occupants and assets.
  • Ensures the existence of position descriptions with measurable and achievable performance standards which meet the guidelines presented for the performance appraisal process for every direct reporting employee.
  • Serves as the Safety Officer for UPMC locations in the absence of the Director.

  • Assembles, analysis, monitoring and initiation of corrective action on matters related to the areas of life safety, safety, hazardous materials and wastes, utility management, medical equipment, security and emergency preparedness; creation and presentation of safety-related reports, as required.
  • Participates in standing and ad hoc committees as required to represent safety issues.
  • Develops of on-going efforts to promote a growth of safety awareness within the institutions.
  • Supports the established continuing education and annual safety training program.
  • Develops intra-departmental personnel policies which are realistic, in compliance with hospital and governmental practices and which promote maximum staff effectiveness.
  • Responsible for training, safety, infection control and customer relations.
  • Responds to administrative requests for input on potential or actual safety concerns.
  • Participates in and oversight of safety compliance activities relating to the requirements of regulating bodies such as the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, Occupational Safety & Health Administration, Department of Health, Department of Environmental Protection, Environmental Protection Agency, and others.
  • Participates in the development, in cooperation with other departmental managers as required, such inter-departmental policies and procedures as are necessary for the efficient execution of all responsibilities.
  • Maintains a high degree of department awareness of the quality improvement process.
  • Analyzes inter-departmental process flow for the purpose of making it less expensive, timelier, or more supportive of Hospital and UPMC Quality Goals.
  • Provides for on-going training of staff.
  • Maintains responsibility for hiring, retaining, training and dismissing employees; completion of periodic performance evaluations; development of staffing schedules promoting deployment which coincides with departmental demand and workload.
