Job Summary
The Manager, Human Performance Improvement is responsible for working on initiatives that reduce serious injuries and fatalities potential. The role participates in injury and accident investigations, conducts exposure reduction workshops and increases near miss reporting. Moreover, the position acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all other human performance improvement initiatives.
Main Responsibilities

Human Performance Serious Injury and Fatality (SIFs) Reduction Initiatives

  • Participate in investigations with a serious injuries and fatality potential (SIFp).
  • Identify human performance factors that contribute to injuries and accidents with SIFp.
  • Review investigation data to identify corrective actions that will address human performance factors.
  • Support functional Senior Management in the implementation of proposed local corrective actions
  • Develop and implement system-wide corrective actions related to Human Performance
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the corrective actions that are implemented as a result of the SIFp investigations

Exposure Reduction Workshops

  • Facilitate exposure reduction workshops where key operations stakeholders are present to identify mitigation plans to prevent SIFs
  • Present findings outlining recommended mitigation plans and paths forward to senior leadership
  • Act as Project Manager for the selected mitigation plans to ensure they are completed in a timely manner and the required resources are in place

Fatigue Management

  • Advise the Senior Manager, Regulatory Affairs with the development of processes in CN’s Fatigue Management Plan
  • Assess employee schedules for fatigue and opportunities to make changes to mitigate fatigue-related risk
  • Implement system-wide fatigue management initiatives
  • Attend monthly meetings of CN’s fatigue management working group

Deliver training

  • Deliver CN training to frontline and mid-level management on how to investigate human performance caused accidents and develop corrective measures from the accident findings

Safety Culture

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify initiatives that will increase the reporting of near misses
  • Implement near miss reporting initiatives

Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires minimal travel (up to 20%) to participate in safety audits and workshops and deliver training. The incumbent is initially required to spend time in the field to better understand CN operations and more effectively complete their job.
Requirements
Experience

Human Performance Improvement

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in human performance improvement or equivalent education

o Experience within the transportation or railroad industry*

  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Organizational Psychology, Human Resources, Business Management, or a related field of study
  • Certificate in Human Performance Improvement*
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
