Position: Manager of Engagement
Start Date: As soon as possible
Duration of Appointment: Full-Time, Regular
UBCP/ACTRA is seeking a visionary and innovative leader to take on the role of Manager of Engagement.
Reporting to the Executive Administrative Director, the Manager will guide the Union’s stakeholder engagement (membership and external audiences) and organizational communications. They will develop and deliver on a strategy to effectively support the organization’s strategic priorities and build, maintain and manage the UBCP/ACTRA brand.
The Manager will be part of the UBCP/ACTRA Management team, bringing creative leadership and vision, along with hands-on knowledge and skills, to the Union’s Member Services, Industry Relations and Communications Departments.
An ideal candidate will understand the role of trade unions in general and will appreciate UBCP/ACTRA’s role in the Canadian cultural/entertainment industries.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, public relations or a related discipline. Equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience with strong leadership, mentoring and team building skills.
  • Extensive knowledge in developing and executing strategic communications plans.
  • Industry experience is an asset.
  • Union organizing experience is an asset.

Responsibilities:

Communications Strategy

  • Responsible for recruiting, directing, supervising, including performance management of the Communications, Industry Relations and Member Services departments. Create and oversee the implementation of an overall strategy for public affairs and communications with the goal of creating a strong, coherent image of UBCP/ACTRA.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of UBCP/ACTRA’s communications strategy.
  • Identify opportunities to collaborate with other organizational initiatives and activities by developing communications materials and programs to support them.
  • Assign and approve press releases, articles and online communications, and coordinate media interaction.
  • Oversee year-round communications programs.
  • Effectively manage resources and the departmental budget and determine return on investment (ROI) for all communications investments and activities.
  • Analyze data and conduct research to determine the concerns and expectations of the organization’s stakeholders.
  • Develop, communicate, and advocate UBCP/ACTRA’s public policy to government and regulatory tribunals and other forums including formal submissions to various government departments.
  • Direct the development of UBCP/ACTRA’s stakeholder engagement assets.
  • Coordinate communication with authors of selected abstracts, moderators and experts for news conferences and meet-the expert sessions. Ensure the UBCP/ACTRA maintains an intersectional lens of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all communications.

Public Affairs

  • Build and maintain sustainable relationships with government, media, members of the community, public affairs offices, and other organizations.
  • Develop, implement, and manage external communications, including reviewing, researching, and updating UBCP/ACTRA’s news media and public relations policies. Identify audiences and appropriate platforms and formats for communications.
  • Oversee all aspects of planning and coordinating logistics of meetings: media functions including press conferences, media workroom, interview rooms, third party materials room, etc.
  • Develop strategies to effectively deliver press releases to media and communicate benefits to media outlet of accepting press releases.
  • Plan and oversee the preparation of the production of publicity brochures, handouts, email bulletins, promotional videos, photographs, films, and multimedia programs.
  • Manage the public relations and media aspects of any potential or present crisis.
  • Coordinate media requests for information, interviews, and media photo opportunities.

Member Services

  • Oversee membership processes and make improvements in keeping with the Union’s Bylaws.
  • Deepen and expand interactions between UBCP/ACTRA and Membership to strengthen and extend services and supports.
  • Foster engagement with the Membership, including the management of the UBCP/ACTRA Awards, events, and education opportunities.
  • Develop projects and initiatives to give back to the membership.
  • Report to Membership at the Membership Meetings.

Engagement

  • Coordinate the development of and content for UBCP/ACTRA’s website, with the goal of keeping it current, relevant and a central, timely and effective resource for UBCP/ACTRA members and external audiences.
  • Oversee the planning of and participation in events to foster better member engagement.
  • Respond to public requests for information from members, government agencies, businesses, advocacy groups, and other associations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with counterparts in professional organizations, advocacy organizations, and other community organizations through various initiatives and jointly sponsored communication campaigns and programs.
  • Participate in industry groups, coalitions, and committees.
  • Build community relations by attending events as appropriate.
  • Organize union events to foster recognition of Union talent, member engagement, advance advocacy efforts.

Industry Relations

  • Lead efforts to maintain and develop positive and supportive relationships with government and industry partners.
  • Oversee the development of media and lobbying campaigns to advocate for the development and protection of Canadian culture, a strong film, television and digital media industry, and increased work opportunities for members.
  • Implement strategic power-building and external organizing campaign plans in collaboration with the Director of Contracts with clear goals to organize non-union workers into the union.
  • Engage disengaged union members around specific campaigns to build a united and engaged union.
  • In collaboration with the EAD and Director of Contracts (DOC), develop an annual strategic plan for the department, with defined targets and goals, and a plan to meet them.
  • Support the Director of Contracts with ratification, job action (strike) campaigns.
  • Oversee organizers in planning and leading actions, events and marches.
  • Plan and execute organizing-focused education initiatives to embed a culture of organizing.
  • Oversee the filing of organizing-related applications.
