The Manager Development & Project Engineering provides leadership, direction, and professional engineering guidance to Operations & Logistics (O&L) Products to ensure safe, cost-effective and timely development and execution of the annual capital project program across Suncor’s 17 O&L Products sites (16 Canadian Terminals and the Ethanol Plant) in 5 provinces.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical or Chemical Engineering with Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation
  • 15+ years relevant Oil and Gas industry experience, preferably in Refinery, Pipelines or Distribution operations
  • 7+ years of team leadership experience with accountability for recruitment, performance management, budgeting, and strategic planning with a demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and develop technical and project staff
  • Project expertise in the development and execution of complex, multi-disciplinary projects and familiarity with the interrelationship of all engineering disciplines
  • Demonstrated understanding of project management best practices, tools, applications and KPIs in support of development and execution of safe, reliable, cost effective and timely projects
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, and listening), change management, non-authoritative leadership and organizational skills

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for project development and execution across the 17 O&L Products owned and operated sites, including the Canadian Terminals and the Ethanol plant.
  • Leads and directs the efforts of the Development & Project Engineering team to deliver safe, efficient and effective capital projects, as well as OEMS gap closure and improvement activities across all Products CFTs.
  • Measures and manages the effectiveness of projects by stewarding to the Develop & Manage Projects, Manage Health & Safety and Manage Goods & Services process key performance indicators (KPI), leveraging the Best Practice performance indicators (PI).
  • Ensures that the development leads and project managers supporting the cross-functional teams effectively prioritize and execute to the long-range capital plan, the major event calendar (MEC) and planned site outages.
  • Ensures all health, safety and environmental standards are upheld; monitors the effective application of project management best practices and addresses actions arising from Gate Reviews, Field Level Risk Assessments, Critical Controls Assurance activities, and Incident Learning Program
  • Develops capable and competent Suncor and contractor development leads and project managers, reviews and manages performance, ensures provision of appropriate training and development.
  • Optimizes the project development and execution strategy at the portfolio level, including, but not limited to, defining optimal contracting strategics, technical specifications and streamlining project execution.

Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • This is an office-based role with regular overnight travel throughout Canada
