Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including compliance, security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, market, and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight, and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth.
We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as a Regional Reputational and Sustainability Risk (RSR) Manager.
The Manager, Reputational and Sustainability Risk, MENAT has the remit and responsibilities for reputational and sustainability Risk matters affecting the lines of businesses in MENAT. The job holder reports to and works closely with the Regional Head of Reputational and Sustainability Risk, MENAT.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Protect the Group’s global brand and profitability from sustainability and reputational risk, incurred by supporting customers, by working with third parties / vendors or engaging in activities which could have adverse impacts on people, the environment or otherwise on the bank’s reputation.
  • Provide proactive second line of defense risk stewardship for reputational and sustainability risk and be the key contact for reputational and sustainability risk, including advisory on related policies.
  • To contribute to HSBC’s evolving “ESG” risk agenda, including in areas of climate risk, greenwashing, human rights, and risk stewardship for Net Zero.
  • Supporting key decision-making for including the Reputational Risk and Client Selection Committees (RRCSC) for relevant businesses in MENAT.
  • To be a key member of the Reputational & Sustainability Risk team and reporting to and supporting the Regional Head of Reputational and Sustainability Risk for MENAT.
  • Act as the primary point of contact providing second line of defense review, challenge and recommendations for all reputational and sustainability risk matters resulting from relevant risks in the risk taxonomy and across the client portfolio, vendors / third parties and on enterprise level.
  • Review, challenge, and provide guidance to facilitate decisioning of reputational and sustainability risk escalations in form of advisory queries or formal committee escalations and paper submissions.
  • Manage and align inputs from frontline teams and relevant risk stewards / subject matter experts (SMEs) across the region, including Compliance, Legal, Geopolitical Risk, Public Affairs, Communications, Tax and others to produce succinct yet comprehensive reviews for consideration by seniors or decisioning committees such as the Reputational Risk Committee (RRC).
  • Within the context of the RRC, ensure effective validation of triggers, coordinate with individual markets and Group on cross-jurisdictional and cross-regional cases with peers regionally and globally.
  • Ensure operational integrity and compliance with all related policies and procedures, while providing specialist knowledge and direction to stakeholders related to all guidelines as well as oversight of quality for key RRC artefacts.
  • Analysis, clearance, and recommendations relating to sustainability risk, including risk ratings, in accordance with the sustainability sector policies and applicable other internal procedures, guidance and policies.
  • Provide advice to ensure lending and other financing such as via bonds or trade are undertaken under green lending or sustainability linked lending products meet HSBC risk appetite (i.e., avoidance of “greenwashing”).
  • Undertake strategic analysis, as required, on emerging issues posing potential reputational risk, including sustainability linked reputational risks and develop mitigation plans, including development of relevant principles or policies.
    Requirements

To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • The role-holder needs to be a dynamic self-starter, with initiative and proven problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent collaboration abilities and interpersonal skills to effectively work with and influence stakeholders and effectively navigate the matrix structure within the organization.
  • Excellent, proven, oral and written communication and business writing skills to articulate often complex, sensitive, controversial, and subjective issues to a wide range of stakeholders through effective briefings or papers.
  • Strong analytical, organization and planning skills with an attention to detail and an ability to understand, consolidate, distil and -with clarity- present diverse and complex sources of information, including different perspectives.
  • Track record of applying sound judgment and decision-making, demonstrating critical and strategic thinking skills to make timely and independent decisions / recommendations, and acting when outcomes are unclear.
  • Knowledge of the Group’s functions, policies, and processes, as well as the products and services offered by the organization, ideally with background in first line/front-office and/or second line risk function.
  • Familiarity with HSBC’s risk management approach, including risk controls.
  • A comprehensive and proven understanding of reputational risk based on relevant experience of risk management with ability to identify, assess and mitigate reputational risk which may arise from a range of other risk types.
  • An understanding of ESG / sustainability risk and how client-, third party and enterprise-related reputational and sustainability risk clearance operates.
  • We welcome applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds across risk disciplines, preferably ESG, Sustainability, Reputational Risk, and from candidates with diverse experience within business areas including Private Banking, Retail Banking, Asset Management, Insurance, Wholesale Banking
  • Qualifications would include graduate degree in Business Administration, Finance Risk Management, or a related field.
  • Bachler’s degree is required.
