JOB SUMMARY:

As a member of the Governance team, the Manager, Research is a key managerial role within the AFMC structure, responsible for overseeing and enhancing national initiatives addressing the health concerns of the communities and populations served by Canadian medical schools. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Governance and collaborating closely with other members of the AFMC Senior Leadership team, this position will ensure streamlined execution of all activities and functions related to medical education.

Responsibilities:

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Liaise with the Vice President, Research (VP Research) to ensure that all Research goals are met.
  • In collaboration with the VP Research, oversee and manage the ongoing advancement and evaluation of the AFMC Strategic Plan actions related to Research.
  • Develop, oversee and update the department work plan.
  • Shape agendas, create briefing notes and monitor meeting actions, oversee the creation of meeting minutes and proactively address issues across the Standing Committee on Research and Innovation (SCRI).
  • Oversee the operation of committees and networks that report to the SCRI ensuring seamless coordination of meetings, including the development of work plans, terms of reference, and membership lists.
  • Produce, review, and distribute evidence-based briefs, reports, and other publications pertinent to the activities and findings related to Research.
  • Oversee the maintenance of archival records, contact management, website elements, and other communication tools.
  • Manage financial aspects for C&N budgets and other Research related initiative costs ensuring financial prudence.
  • Coordinate with other departments or teams, ensuring seamless communication and effective execution of tasks.
  • Continuously assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes related to research initiatives, proposing and implementing improvements where necessary.
  • Mentor, coach and set performance targets for direct reports fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop and empower direct reports by providing guidance and opportunities to develop their skills by taking on new challenges and responsibilities.
  • Identify potential risks and challenges associated with research initiatives and develop strategies to mitigate them, ensuring the successful implementation of planned activities.
  • Willing to travel occasionally and work flexible hours to meet deadlines, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll need to be successful in the role (essential qualifications):

  • Post-secondary degree in business, project management or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of three years relevant experience with demonstrated progression in responsibilities at a Sr. Coordinator or Managerial role, preferably in the not-for-profit, health or health research sector.
  • Familiarity with the Canadian medical education landscape.
  • Proven track record in strategic planning and execution related to health or health research initiatives.
  • Experience in developing or evaluating policies.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating information and ideas in speaking and writing effectively, including to large groups and senior leaders.
  • Capacity to effectively collaborate in diverse team environments.
  • Skills in stakeholder engagement and consensus-building.
  • Exemplary writing skills, adjusted to target audiences.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries

While fulfilling job responsibilities, this role requires flexibility to work in different environments, including a remote home office setup, occasional travel, and participation in in-person meetings. Due to these demands, the employee will typically engage in the following activities:

  • Extended periods of sitting, often at a computer workstation.
  • Flexibility in work hours, including the potential for occasional overtime, to meet project deadlines, especially when coordinating with different time zones or during travel
