  • Class 2 Certificate of Competency and University Qualification
  • Previous experience as Master for a minimum of 8 months on relevant type of ships.
  • A proven track record as Superintendent for a minimum of 1 year in a shore based Shipping Company will have an advantage.
  • Candidate who are deemed technically competent and without shore experience will be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • The marine superintendent is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of navigation, seamanship and cargo handling policies on board all vessels within the fleet group.
  • The incumbent must be fully conversant with the operational systems and procedures for the vessels allocated to him.
  • To promote a good sound working relationship with ship’s staff building trust between all parties concerned.
  • To provide leadership and guidance across the professional discipline covering many aspects of ship’s operations including cargo care, navigation, personnel management and housekeeping, together with commercial elements involving charter parties and claims, always consistent with National, International, Group and Company regulations and requirements.
  • To manage and motivate ship’s master to ensure that they provide the ships, customers and the fleet unit with the required levels of service and professionalism.
  • The Fleet operates 24 hours of the day, 365 days a year. Due to the nature of oil trading, many decisions have to be made on operational, safety and environmental matters on an urgent basis.
  • The incumbent has to act on his own authority, especially when faced with an incident/accident or problem outside normal office hours.
  • Ensure that vessels within the fleet group are run safely, reliably and economically to the highest professional standard, thus ensuring a high level of cargo care in both quality and quantity.
  • Ensure that all the International and Flag State legal and regulatory requirements and company policies concerning ship operations, including cargo care, the safety of navigation and the health and safety of personnel, are always adhered to.
  • Ensure that vessels within the fleet unit are successfully vetted prior to chartering out to third parties by arranging timely vetting inspections, responding promptly to observations raised, initiating remedial actions and identifying gaps in policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the Group’s reputation is safeguarded and take responsibility for ensuring the minimization of exposures to environmental pollution
  • Act as the Company’s on-site representative in the event of an incident or casualty, coordinating and completing the task to its logical conclusion.
  • Lead or assist in investigations into incidents when required, interpreting lessons learnt for dissemination throughout the managed fleet and, where appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain a close working relationship with customer commercial contacts to keep them aware of the capabilities of individual vessels to fulfill requirements
  • Actively promulgate and promote the Company’s HSEQ policies and ensure that expectations are fully understood by all Fleet staff, especially shipboard management.
  • Provide an effective working link on a day-to-day basis between Thome management and ship’s staff.
  • Recognize sub-standard performance and engage Marine HR to agree on closure of skill/performance /knowledge gaps. Act as the focal point for the Marine HR, reporting on the ability of Fleet Personnel, advising the Fleet Manager and/or the Marine HR on matters concerning suitability of personnel for promotion, or career development and undertake assessments of candidates for promotion to Chief off. or Master.
  • Ensure all OCIMF, Q88 and other vessel information questionnaires, as required by principals, are always maintained up to date, including all certification and vetting status updates, as directed.
  • Conduct ship visits as determined by the Fleet Manager and navigation audits as per Company procedure and input navigation audit results into the navigation audits database and follow up on all deficiencies and defects to closure.
  • Support to operations team as required
  • Cargo post fixture issues where required.
  • Dealing with off-spec and PNI issues concerning cargoes.
  • Cargo operation and tank preparation issues.
