Description:
Transport & Environment (T&E), Europe’s leading clean transport think tank and campaign group, is looking for a policy officer to work on its shipping campaign at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) focusing on analysis and advocacy work.
The IMO adopted in 2023 a new GHG Strategy, the goal of which is to reach climate neutrality by the mid-century. The IMO will need to design and implement a basket of binding regulatory measures in the next two-three years to deliver targeted emissions cuts in the mid and long-term and create guaranteed demand for alternative green fuels for the sector.
The policy officer will be expected to contribute to advocacy work at the IMO, member state and other stakeholder levels in order to achieve the highest ambition during the international negotiations.
The role will involve:
- Contributing to T&E’s clean shipping campaign at the IMO in relation but not limited to the Goal-based Fuel Standard (GFS) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII);
- Developing of position papers and advocacy & analytical materials
- Establishing relationships with regulators, NGO representatives and industry stakeholders to expand T&E’s outreach at the IMO;
- Responding to and generating media interest in T&E priorities at the IMO;
- Attend the IMO meetings, speak and represent T&E’s advocacy work at industry, policy or NGOs events;
- Identifying and working with partners outside of Europe to expand T&E’s shipping work outside Europe;
- Support the Shipping team in their overall functioning.
The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:
- Relevant work experience and interest in climate-related issues and the energy transition;
- The ability and motivation to learn technical, economic and legal information, to develop under limited supervision new political, economic or legal arguments and evidence and use them to convince key stakeholders;
- The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policy-makers of different stripes, industry representatives and other stakeholders at appropriate levels;
- Attention to detail;
- Strong Interpersonal skills;
- Strong communication and presentation skills;
- Excellent working knowledge of English. Other (UN) languages are an asset.
