Wärtsilä is an innovative technology company known for being a forerunner in the Marine, Energy, and Energy Storage markets.
As the Market Development Manager, Energy Storage for Australia and APAC, you will support the development and ongoing success of our business in the region. Your primary focus will be on maintaining the market competitiveness of our business in Australia. You will also contribute to other market development activities in the APAC region and other market development topics globally in collaboration with the other members of the Strategic Market Development team, which is part of Wartsila’s Energy Storage and Optimization business (ES&O). You will be part of a growing team comprised of results-oriented and highly collaborative energy storage experts leading ES&O’s global commercial strategy.
The ideal candidate has 5-7 years, or 2 years post-MBA, of analytical and/or commercial strategy experience in the electric power industry with a strong focus on working with or for the various segments in the energy storage and renewable generation value chain. Detailed, actionable knowledge of Australian electricity markets and the skills to analyse and quantify the energy storage hardware and software opportunity in these markets is required. As this will be a cross-functional role, a collaborative approach to your work and demonstrated experience working with multiple teams on simultaneous projects is also required.

As a Market Development Manager, Energy Storage in Australia and APAC, your primary responsibilities will be:

  • To conduct research and analysis that contribute to the comprehensive, up-to-date understanding of the value proposition for grid-scale storage assets in Australia, including revenue optimization under current market structure as well as upcoming market and regulatory developments.
  • To be an expert strategist in grid scale energy storage and its evolving role in the decarbonization and transformation of the power grid, including knowledge and awareness of what our competitors are doing in the market and the maturation of the energy storage supply chain.
  • To use this knowledge to develop market-leading strategy: formulate savvy, competitive growth strategies that grow ES&O’s scale and profitability through effective industry partnerships, strategic marketing efforts, offering refinement, and the development of new business models.
  • To convert strategies to plans that include cost structure benchmarking, pricing analysis and strategy, competitive analysis, partner engagement, project development/deal tracking activities and development of regional plan KPI’s and targets.
  • To implement these plans cross-organizationally with regional sales, finance, product, delivery, and operations teams.
  • To collaborate with your global market development colleagues to spread best practices and knowledge between regions.

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

  • 5-7 years, or 2 years post-MBA, of relevant business development and/or strategy experience, with significant experience working with customers and other entities in the utility-scale energy storage or renewable energy value chain.
  • MBA strongly preferred; bachelor’s degree required.
  • Demonstrated strategic acumen and relevant financial expertise and modelling skills.
  • Proven renewable and energy storage project development and transaction experience.
  • Strong project and process management skills with experience managing cross-functional teams on simultaneous projects without managerial control.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership and collaboration skills.
  • The flexibility to travel domestically and internationally approximately 10-20%.
