Description:

WE ARE OFFERING AN OPPORTUNITY TO A STUDENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING OR MECHATRONICS TO WRITE A MASTER THESIS BASED ON OUR CYCLOROTOR TECHNOLOGY.

Description:
A Cyclogyro rotor consists of several wings arranged parallel to the axis of rotation of a drum. Within one rotation of the drum, each wing changes its angle of attack in a periodic motion (pitch motion). The periodic change of the angle of attack of the wings is realized by a pitch mechanism. Each wing is connected to a central hub (hub ring) by a connecting rod (conrod). Due to the decentralized bearing of the hub (offset) the angle of attack of the wings is changed via the conrods. The pitch motion of the blades results in a directed air flow and consequently a trust force according to the magnitude (offset length) and direction (offset angle) of the hub deflection.
Since the pitch motion of a wing changes its direction several times per second, its moment of inertia about the pitch axis has a huge influence on the dynamics of a Cyclogyro rotor. Therefore, it is important to know the moment of inertia about the pitch axis of a wing. As a wing is designed from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) its moment of inertia about the pitch axis is scattering due to known phenomena/circumstances from manufacturing and design. This phenomena/circumstances from manufacturing and design cannot be modeled in a meaningful way in the wings CAD model, which would allow the extraction of its moment of inertia about the pitch axis. Hence, the goal of the project is to develop, build and test a test bench which allows the reliable measurement of a wings moment of inertia about its pitch axis.

Our expectations:

  • Test bench and measurement conceptualization including literature research
  • Test bench design and measurement equipment selection
  • Mathematical modelling of the moment of inertia extraction from measurement data
  • Implementation of the mathematical model in MATLAB (or/and SIMULINK) or Python
  • Assembly of the test bench and the measurement equipment
  • Test measurements and validation of the test bench
