Reporting directly to the Director Operational Excellence, the MHE & Automation Engineer identifies, justifies, plans and implement various material handling projects.
The main focus is on improving efficiency, throughput and capacity, while reducing cost, footprint and health and safety risk.
We see this role as a center piece of our ability to build an industry leading operational team.
Responsibilities

Material Handling Equipment

  • Helping to create warehouse plans and sort centre designs using various types of material handling equipment such as conveyors (manual and automated), sorters, tippers.
  • Support the operations and procurement with analysis, justification, and selection of various material handling equipment types (forklifts, pallet jacks, gaylord tippers, conveyors, etc.).
  • Coordinate equipment justification, selection and implementation with our health and safety team.
  • Take part in an industry leading engineering team to ensure Intelcom’s performance is continuously improved.
  • Contribute to the engineering of new building expansion, in regards to layout, equipment, operational flow, etc.
  • Visit delivery stations and sortation hubs frequently to ensure comprehension of the operations and get buy in from operations team on key initiatives.

Automation

  • Define applicable thresholds (volume, building specs, parcel mix) for sortation automation based on throughput, operational cost and quality.
  • Support the creation of an automation roadmap for Intelcom’s middle mile and last mile operations.
  • Collaborate with various departments in the identification of potential sortation HUBs and last mile delivery stations with the potential for automation and collaborate on business cases for each.
  • Design physical operational flows and automation options for various sites.
  • Interact with industry partners and automation providers to evaluate potential solutions for short, medium and long term.
  • Collaborate with and challenge service providers to create and select the most versatile and applicable solutions for our operations.
  • Partner with our IT team in the justification, design, implementation, testing and go live phases.
  • Provide insight for RFI, RFP and RFQ processes for automation and material handling equipment.
  • Continuously strive to improve the current automation and sortation equipment at our disposal from a process and hardware perspective and collaborate with IT on software requirements.
  • Contribute to Manual and Automated Sort Centers of Excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial or mecanical engineering, operations management or related field.
  • Graduate degree in engineering, project management or operations management is an asset.
  • 10+ years in operations, experience in the transportation industry is required.
  • 5+ years in a role related to operational excellence, engineering, or performance improvement.
  • 2+ years in an automated warehouse or HUB environment.
  • High proficiency in Excel.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD is required, simulation software is an asset.
  • Detail oriented, data driven and strong ability to keep people accountable.
