JOB DESCRIPTION

This student placement role in Materials Science, part of the Process Development Services (PDS)
team, is laboratory based at the Thermo Fisher Scientific Cork, Ireland site. The Cork site is an Active
Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing facility operating as a contract development and
manufacturing organisation (CDMO). We currently supply API for medicines, to a range of
customers world-wide.
Pharmaceutical materials science is about understanding and evaluating how materials are
transformed through manufacturing processes into the final dose form the patient will use. It is a
broad discipline involving both chemical and physical sciences. The Material Science team use our
specialist technical knowledge and advanced characterisation techniques to support clients (both
internal and external) to resolve complex problems across many dose forms and to help manage
change with the materials we use and manufacture.
The purpose of this role is to provide materials science services on business prioritised projects for
internal and external clients. The role covers a diverse range of services including technical input,
consultation, provision of physical properties analysis of a diverse range of materials using
sophisticated solid-state analytical techniques, including interpretation and reporting to the
customer.
The student placement role will work within the Materials Science team, part of the PDS team

supporting site activities.

  • Provides materials science support for business prioritised projects for existing and new

products at the Cork site, for other Thermo Fisher Scientific sites and for external clients.

  • Provides physical properties testing / measurement data, including interpretation and

reporting, on APIs, excipients, drug product intermediates, devices and finished goods from

a varied client base.

  • May make recommendations to clients regarding operation, selection or design of

processing equipment.

  • May be responsible for the qualification, calibration and maintenance of laboratory

equipment.

  • General support of laboratory – storage of chemicals, updating chemical database,

participating in risk assessments, shipping samples etc.

  • Contribute to team ways of working.
  • Communicate regularly with other members of team.
