Description:
To assist the midwives providing care to women using our maternity services.
To carry out a defined range of duties involving direct care as directed by and in support of a registered midwife; to be able to work regularly without direct supervision.
To report any changes in the condition of the mother and baby or untoward incidents to the midwife responsible for care.
Duties and responsibilities for the role will be discussed and agreed on a daily basis with the midwife in charge, with communication channels open throughout the day for further advice and support.
To document all care given via IT systems to women and babies contemporaneously.
Assist midwives as directed to offer care to women during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods. This will include: providing psychological support to women and physical care of the mother and newborn.
Support all women in their chosen method of feeding the baby
Act in a pro-active way and in line with the principles of the Baby Friendly Initiative guidance, to encourage women to breast feed.
To provide appropriate advice, within their level of knowledge, to parents on aspects of parenting in relation to the baby’s wellbeing and safety.
Report any concerns to the midwife in charge.
Refer patient anxieties, potential problems or complaints onto the midwife.
To manage own time effectively, ensuring all women/babies within the caseload are cared for under the direction of the midwife.
To ensure that equipment used for clinical care is cleaned and clinical areas are clean and free from hazards.
