REQUISITION SUMMARY

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for engineering investigation, research, design, development and analysis of chassis structures, suspension, steering, and axle components within the Chassis Development group at Peterbilt Division Headquarters in Denton, Texas.
Duties involve working on new development programs, employing innovative skills to evolve ideas from concepts to implementation, current production design & support, factory process improvements, and field service & warranty projects.
Additional duties include providing engineering assistance, assembly / system design, root cause analysis, problem definition and resolution, training and other engineering duties supporting various aspects of expedited programs.
Additional tasks include completion of design for six sigma documentation in assigned phases of project, tracking costs and applying standard engineering techniques with minimal supervision, occasionally requiring independent evaluation.
Hiring level for this position will be dependent upon education and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of and/or experience in heavy truck assembly, components, and systems is preferred.
  • Previous design experience of parts and assemblies is preferred.
  • Knowledge of component analysis and validation techniques will be given preference.
  • Knowledge of chassis structure and suspensions, layouts and system design will be given preference.
  • Proficiency with computer applications for project management, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Excellent communication (verbal/written) and presentation skills desirable with strong, effective interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to learn quickly, easily adapt to change, and a desire to solve complex technical problems.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and initiate designs of a complex nature and conduct necessary research incidental to design.
  • Complete design projects through the processes of planning, concept development, calculation and design analysis, packaging studies, design, testing, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Use knowledge and skills in Windchill and Creo to create CAD models and drawings.
  • Apply knowledge of stress analysis and FEA.
  • Apply knowledge of various materials and manufacturing processes for components used in vehicle chassis.
  • Apply knowledge of GD&T principles.
  • Develop and support FMEA, DVP&R, and other aspects of DFSS.
  • Support sourcing process and manage supplier activities related to design and manufacture of components.
  • Coordinate and complete projects and design efforts with other engineering groups, departments, and divisions within the company, such as PACCAR Technical Center, DAF, Kenworth, and the PACCAR Engine Company.
  • Prepare engineering activity status reports and other detailed reporting as directed.
  • Identify, prioritize, and coordinate resolution of production, production control, warranty, and quality assurance issues as appropriate using a proactive approach.
  • Apply a proactive approach to defining issues and reaching early resolution and consensus.
  • Act in a professional manner in all contacts with external and internal customers.
  • Occasional travel.
