Job description:

DESY

DESY expands its research on novel plasma-based accelerator technologies for future applications in health, photon science, and particle physics. Ultrafast laser technology is one of the key enabling technologies for these activities. DESY just started to develop a next-generation laser-plasma electron accelerator to demonstrate seeding of DESYs PETRA III synchrotron light source. For this project, we are looking for a mechanical engineer to strengthen our team for scientific engineering. Main tasks will involve CAD design of assemblies for high-energy lasers, scientific optical measurement setups, in-vacuum mechanics and opto-mechanic, as well as hardware and infrastructure for our novel plasma accelerators.

About your role:

  • Mechanical engineering and CAD design in the context of the plasma injector project
  • Design and development of optical setups, in-vacuum components, vacuum chambers and accelerator infrastructure
  • Involvement and active participation during all life-cycles of the engineered hardware, from idea to assembly and test
  • Coordination with internal and external project partners
  • Interfacing with technical support teams
  • Quality control, risk assessment and documentation

About you:

  • Masters degree in mechanical engineering, applied physics, mechatronic or a related field
  • Experience in the design of scientific optical setups, preferably in the context of high-power laser development
  • Experience in engineering of vacuum chambers and motorised in-vacuum components
  • Excellent skills in standard CAD software (NX, Solid Edge, ProEngineer, CATIA, Solid Works, or similar)
  • Excellent communication skills in English (German is a bonus)
  • Working experience software tools for documentation (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
  • Previous work experience in a large laser or accelerator laboratory is a plus

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.
We look forward to receiving your application via our application portal:
