Description:

SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Engineering Technologist (MET) is primarily responsible for the completion of tank trailer/vacuum trailer designs from concept to production using AutoCAD and Inventor 3D. The MET interprets customer driven specifications to arrive at a design and produce the working drawings for estimation and fabrication. The MET must research and apply Canadian and United States motor vehicle safety standards, provincial and state weight laws, and Codes relating to the transportation of dangerous goods. The MET will review plans and confer with internal stakeholders to meet project specifications, complete documentation packages and produce drawing sets.

Responsibilities:

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and prepare CAD working plans, charts and/or scale drawings for tank trailer/vacuum trailer projects from observation, measurements, sketches and specifications
  • Produce detailed and final drawings using CAD working plans, charts and/or scale drawings for tank trailer/vacuum trailer projects from observation, measurements, sketches and specifications
  • Work closely with others in Engineering, Purchasing, Customer Services, Sales and Production to choose cost effective materials and manufacturing techniques
  • Organize and maintain a design and CAD digital file database for each project
  • Provide technical guidance and direction in the interpretation and implementation of specifications and requirements related to the use of CAD files
  • Revise computer-aided designs and plans to comply with in-process change orders
  • Brainstorm as part of a team or developing design concepts using CAD and other traditional design tools.
  • Complete documentation packages and produce drawing sets
  • Employ problem-solving strategies and find solutions to product/system design issues
  • Ensure proper documentation of all work, products and relevant activities
  • Analyze unit weight scenarios using Load Expert weight distribution software
  • Support and maintain documentation as outlined in the QC manual and as required by the ASME Code, National Board regulations and Transport Canada
  • Participating as Lead in external Code audits.
  • Assist marketing in reviewing bid specifications and requests for quotations as needed
  • Consult with sub-contractors
  • Attend Code meetings and seminars
  • Perform other duties, assignments and special projects that may be required on occasion
