Description:

UTILIZES CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE PRACTICE AND INFUSION SETTINGS THROUGH:

  • Validating and documenting patient reported information
  • Obtaining, reporting and documenting vital signs
  • Following established safety, environment and infection control standards.
  • Performs routine clinical functions, including but not limited to vital signs, height, weight, pain screening and documentation of chief complaints.
  • Document use of interpreter as appropriate. Work with interpreting services to facilitate interpreter participation for medical appointments in person, by video or by phone.
  • Assists with medication reconciliation by helping patients to update their medication lists.
  • Assists Nurses and Providers and patients in preparation for exam and/or procedures.
  • Able to perform sterile processing procedures in outpatient clinic such as Cidex OPA and maintain all appropriate logs.
  • Assist in complex medical procedures such as Laser, TRUS, Colposcopy, Anoscopy and IRC. Successfully complete all appropriate competencies to ensure appropriate training and skill to assist and set up for said procedures.
  • Act as chaperone as needed for medical providers.
  • Works as a float for all Cancer Center Adult Infusion Services.
  • Transports patients as directed and ensures their safety.
  • Monitors patient flow in and out of the clinic.
  • Obtains specimens and performs simple Point of Care Testing as directed. Including QA/QC and EKGs. Performs AccuChek
  • Obtains specimens and performs simple laboratory procedures conforming to all policies and procedures related to specimen handling and processing.
  • Participates in updating mandatory logs (i.e.: temperature log, disaster cabinet log, crash cart log).
  • Offers patients juice, blankets and other care items during this visit. Is also responsible for ordering patient care amenities (i.e. juice, coffee, etc,) as inventory gets low.
  • Assists clinical staff in warming towels and blankets as necessary.
  • Completes referrals to other providers as ordered by the physician
  • Obtains authorizations from insurers for medications
  • Performs clinical activities in an accurate and timely manner
  • Assist physician staff in writing and sending out patient communications
  • Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by JCAHO/Title 22
  • Completion of annual competency testing
  • Ensures all medication cabinets remain locked at all times.
  • Collaborates with all members of the practice team in activities to coordinate patient care.
  • Demonstrates courtesy, common sense and follow through in all telephone communications, maintaining the Medical Center Telephone Standards.
  • Ensures a professional and helpful working environment by upholding the House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center.
  • Notifies providers of patient delays and service issues. Acts and advocate for patients to help facilitate provider punctuality in seeing patients according to schedule.
  • Communicates provider delays with front office team and makes regular announcements to waiting room as needed when delays are over 30 minutes.
  • Shares pertinent information and observations with other health team members.
  • Identifies and communicates problems to the nursing staff or appropriate supervisor.
  • Offers suggestions for change or improvement in clinic/practice operations.
  • Works with supervisor and colleagues in response to patient care needs through improved procedures and administrative systems.
  • Assists patients with issues and complaints utilizing conflict management skills.
  • Coordinates care and resolves patient care issues using Mercury Messaging phones.
  • Utilizes Electronic Health Record (APEX) for documentation within the scope of practice of a Hospital Assistant which may include but not limited to:
  • Documentation of vital signs, height, weight and pain scale.
  • Enter patient chief complaint and history (i.e. tobacco/family hx/ med/surg/social).
  • Enter patient reported medications and allergies.
  • Order & sign POCT with signed protocol.
  • Documentation of point of care test results.
  • Enter & “pend” scripted orders from provider.
  • Open a Medication Refill Encounter for provider.
  • Scheduling laboratory, radiology and other testing with a written order from a provider.
  • Open telephone encounters.
  • Open staff messages.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

UCSF’s Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • All candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria:
  • Certificate of training or graduation from an accredited MA, Home Health Aide, PCA, CNA, dental or paramedic program or college degree in a related field such as community health, infectious disease, public health or health education and 6 months of relevant experience OR
  • 2 years of relevant experience as a Medical Assistant in a hospital or medical practice
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both directly and over the phone.
  • Able to meet physical requirements.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting working in an oncology practice
  • Experience with insurance verification, medical record data abstraction, medical assisting, or patient financial services strongly preferred.
  • Degree from accredited medical assisting school.
  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian) strongly preferred.
  • Current State of California Phlebotomy Certification (CPT1)

Responsibilities:

OPERATIONS MAINTENANCE - OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:

  • Maintains clean, well-stocked exam rooms, hub rooms and lab. Responsible for ordering, and maintaining supplies. Maintenance of lab equipment.
  • As requested reviews Lab log of results and prints results for providers
  • Obtains insurance authorizations for medications, procedures and film or slide review authorizations.
  • Maintains biohazard and chemotherapy waste bins to ensure removal from Infusion Center on daily basis and/or when bins are full.
  • Schedules complex procedures and coordinates services for patients
  • Assigns other Hospital Assistant lunches and ensures coverage of clinic
  • Maintains supply standards as directed by nursing staff or appropriate supervisor.
  • Adheres to infection control procedures as outlined in the Infection Control Manual.
  • Adheres to the Ambulatory Services policy and procedures for the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing of equipment.
  • Participates in various QI and Customer Service initiatives such as wait time studies, outcome data collection from procedures, etc.
    The hourly compensation range for this role is $31.90 - $39.82. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate, position requirements, AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
    For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
