Description:

ROLE SUMMARY: The post holder will play a key role in the continuous development of all services provided by Medical Equipment Services. Being one of the departments Technicians, you are expected to be registered with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), lead by example, and support other staff members within the department. You will maintain, repair, and calibrate a wide variety of medical equipment utilising specialised test equipment and precision tools. There will be occasions when equipment will be connected to a patient whilst work is performed, and where equipment will be located in an awkward position or require heavy lifting.
You will encounter frequent interruption from your work. You will supervise and teach other members of technical staff, and actively engage in their professional development. You will communicate with a variety of people, internal and external to the Trust, utilising appropriate language for the audience. For example, holding a technical conversation with Engineers employed by manufacturers, or relaying technical information to non-technical staff in a manner they understand.
The communication will be both written and verbal. You will perform work primarily at the Tameside General Hospital site, but you will also be required to carry out work within the community setting. It will also be expected that you operate from other local hospitals on occasion. You will form part of a technical on call team, covering weekends and bank holidays.
LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATION You will input work performed onto the eQuip database, and provide detailed technical reports where necessary. You will be required to write and present complex technical reports to multi-disciplined teams on occasion in order to assist with investigations, procurement exercises, or showing compliance. Ensure that all standards and legislations are adhered to and work within Trust policy, departmental guidelines, manufacturers recommendations and other forms of guidance at all times. Represent the Department and Trust when external contractors are on site, when attending seminars related to your specialty and when attendance to any meeting is required.
You will review departmental and Trust wide policies and procedures, and offer proposed changes to content. Prioritise own work and work of junior staff when necessary. Identify priority jobs awaiting attention and deal with promptly and appropriately. Arrange visits to customer premises to accommodate their needs, adjusting your workload to suit.
Accountable for all your own actions KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS You will maintain IEng registration with the Engineering Council through an appropriate professional institution, and exceed the required annual CPD. You will maintain competence in the field of medical equipment maintenance, allowing for effective, safe, and efficient maintenance, repair, and calibration to be performed. It is expected that you will work on all types of medical equipment across the site. You will carry a good understanding of the networking of medical devices and associated software packages, working closely alongside the Trusts IT Team.
Information will be shared and Cyber Security will be maintained at all times. HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT: nsure that work carried out by yourself and by technicians under your supervision is of high quality and is performed safely, promptly and in a cost effective manner. Monitor external contractor visits for quality of work and fulfilment of contract. Ensure the safety of the contractor, staff public and yourself at all times whilst the contractor is on site.
Supervising and instructing other technicians within the department who are undergoing training within your specialist field. In some instances this may be a trainee at school leaver age or a child attending school on placement for work experience. Assist the MES Team Leader in identifying training needs and implementing training programmes within the department. Perform basic training to other disciplines throughout the Trust or where contracted to do so.
Assist in the production of user guides or training guides, in line with manufacturers recommendations, for use by clinical staff or the end user (patient, parent or guardian). EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT Collecting equipment for service or repair in the region of 10 times a day and returning to users afterwards. Portable equipment up to 10Kg may be carried though trolleys are provided for bulky or heavy items. Cover the equipment during adverse weather conditions for protection.
Occasional requirement, after decontamination training has taken place, to maintain and repair medical equipment where sufficient decontamination hasnt taken place. Internal and external decontamination must be carried out using the decontamination facilities and protocol provided. Safety standards must be adhered to at all times when handling chemicals, using medical gases, lifting heavy items, using a display screen or using machinery with exposed parts. Latex products are used within the department.
Contact with adult, paediatric and neonatal patients and their relatives will be of a polite and caring nature when performing work on medical equipment in their vicinity or when attached to the patient. Complex schematic diagrams will be interpreted to aide fault finding & repair for long periods on occasion. Detailed calibration procedures are to be followed frequently to ensure accuracy of medical equipment prior to clinical use. It will be necessary to commute off site on occasion to collect, repair, maintain or deliver medical equipment to customers external to the Trust
