Australia is regularly affected by severe weather events. These events are growing in frequency and severity, leading to increased impacts on the economy, infrastructure, property, and wellbeing.
To address this, the Bureau of Meteorology has undertaken significant steps to deliver a more customer focussed, integrated and resilient national operation through the Community Services Group (CSG).
The Severe Weather Team is responsible for the daily monitoring of Thunderstorms, Severe Weather and Heavy Rainfall, Tropical Cyclone, and Fire, Heatwave & Air Quality. The team provides advice on conditions which are hazardous or may have a significant impact. The team functions as a single capability across three locations, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. The Tropical Cyclone team is located in Perth and Brisbane, the Fire, Heatwave and Air Quality team in Perth and Melbourne, and the Thunderstorm and Heavy rainfall team in Brisbane and Melbourne.
There will be an expectation that Severe Weather Meteorologists will develop and maintain hazard expertise and competency across multiple hazard areas and teams to allow for flexible deployment, operational resilience and diversity of work. This may include skills that contribute outside of Severe Weather into other parts of CSG.
The Severe Meteorologists will display a dedicated curiosity about severe weather and the impacts of the evolving weather, flood, ocean, and climate landscape. Employing personal drive and integrity, and communicating with influence, you will be part of a high-performing team through promoting a positive culture of teamwork and continuous improvement.
This role will report to the Team Lead of their hazard specialisation and will be expected to undertake shift work and extended working hours as directed during severe weather.
