The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of Middle School English and Humanities Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The ideal candidate is a warm, creative, and charismatic educator who loves working with middle school students and has expertise in and passion for both literacy and social studies content. This individual will work with colleagues in the Humanities department to develop subject-specific lessons in English and social studies as well as interdisciplinary lessons in civics, history, and pluralism, using the Facing History and Ourselves program and other frameworks that utilize project-based assessments and experiential learning. Leading candidates have strong classroom management skills and experience in delivering instruction that best meets the needs of individual students through differentiated lessons and universal design for learning.
Exemplary candidates have a record of providing appropriate scaffolding and interventions targeting various academic and social-emotional skills to middle school students of all ability levels, with a particular focus on the teaching of reading, writing, critical thinking, and positive communication skills, as well as executive functioning skills. They have demonstrated success in partnering with learning support staff and parents in addition to integrating positive behavior management strategies in classrooms that include neurodiverse learners. The ideal candidate’s classroom is one that features a strong emphasis on student-centered learning to best develop critical thinking, analytical reading, and creative writing skills.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching 6th grade Humanities, an interdisciplinary course in the English and Social Studies departments;
  • Teaching 7th and/or 8th grade English;
  • Teaching homeroom, advisory and/or other experiential education courses;
  • Participating in team meetings to discuss student progress;
  • Working collaboratively within the Upper School English and Social Studies departments and middle school faculty;
  • Other duties as assigned.

A minimum of a BA in English, English education, history, or a related field is required. An MA degree is preferred.

  • At least three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments.
  • Experience in differentiated instruction, project based learning, Collaborative Problem Solving, student-centered instruction, and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred.
  • Training and experience in social emotional learning (SEL) and experiential education preferred.
  • Fluency with technology required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to pluralism and diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) required.
