Talmadge Middle School Principal
Purpose Statement:
The Middle School Principal effectively employs the necessary leadership, supervisory, and
administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student to their fullest potential. Supporting a learning culture of excellence, focusing on the growth and achievement of all children, and championing a vision that attends to the needs of historically underrepresented groups, the Principal oversees all elements of the academic program, co-curricular program, physical plant management, and school community relationships.
The Middle School Principal is the chief administrative and instructional leader for their school, and operates with broad autonomy under the direction of the Executive Administrator and in alignment with District policies, labor agreements, state regulations, and federal statutes. Independent judgment and decision-making is required in matters not having established rules, regulations or policies. The Principal has ultimate accountability for the operation of the school, and they conducts themselves in the best
interest of students and staff, and in support of the District’s mission.
The Middle School Principal fosters a culture of learning, cultural responsiveness, and high
expectations for every student and every adult.
This job reports to: Executive Director

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current Oregon Administrative license or ability to obtain licensure.
  • Master’s degree in Education or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of successful K-12 School Principal experience OR 3+ years of Middle School Assistant Principal experience.
  • Minimum 3 years successful experience as a teacher.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating equity and inclusion.
  • Experience building effective teams along with exceptional coaching skills are essential.
  • Strong curriculum, instructional, and technology knowledge including implementing literacy and math strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills with diverse populations.
  • Working knowledge of laws/policies pertaining to areas of essential job functions.
  • Working knowledge and experience in financial management and budgeting.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish/English or extensive experience with implementation of two-way immersion and/or dual immersion programming.

  • Promote a coherent system of continuous learning and collaboration. Use qualitative and quantitative data to inform decisions and design choices in conjunction with all student programs, and teaching and learning efforts.
  • Create an inclusive culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning for students and staff of all backgrounds.
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of data-driven district and school programs
  • for the purpose of enhancing student growth and achievement for all.
  • Maintain the commitment to intentional Social Emotional Learning opportunities for students, and the building of student agency.

  • Engage families and the community in the continuous improvement process.
  • Ensure all curriculum, instruction, and assessment efforts align to the district’s commitment to equity and are culturally responsive and relevant.
  • Collaborate with district leaders to seamlessly integrate learning initiatives for all focal groups, including but not limited to District Improvement Plan and Building-based Improvement Plans.
  • Knowledge and strong experience in working with diverse populations, including emerging bilinguals, students in alternative settings, and highly capable students.
  • Direct, supervise, facilitate, and evaluate the instructional, guidance, and other programs of the building.
  • Is responsible for educational leadership and student achievement in the assigned building; lead staff in continuous improvement of instruction and program delivery; monitor student performance within the building.
  • Supervise and evaluate work of personnel assigned to the building; develop appropriate recommendations for staff which may involve staff development, placement, dismissal, or reassignment of personnel in conjunction with the appropriate district personnel.
  • Lead the development of program improvement plans at the building level in collaboration with building and district staff; coordinate the involvement of curriculum and instruction, special education and staff development in improving instruction and programs as well as inclusionary practices.
  • Coordinate building’s involvement in the district’s curriculum, program review, and implementation cycles.
  • Maintain professional affiliations for the purpose of ongoing education in the latest developments in education.
  • Collaborate with other principals and district administration for the purpose of developing and implementing a comprehensive, integrated, and effective K-12 program based on school board guidelines.
  • Establish guidelines for student conduct and discipline procedures based on board policy, informed by evidence-based restorative practices, for the purpose of encouraging appropriate student behavior.
  • Supervise school safety program; coordinate required drills to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Maintain an emotionally healthy and physically safe environment for all students and staff.
  • Supervise the security and care of assigned equipment, buildings, grounds, and other school property.
  • Manage school administrative functions (e.g. facility maintenance, budget, staffing, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining safe and efficient school operations within district guidelines.
  • Coordinate and review with university officials and supervising teachers the placement, preparation, training and evaluation of student teachers for the purpose of providing an adequate and effective workforce.
  • Supervise extracurricular activities.
