SUMMARY OF PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Migrant Education Services Secondary Lead Teacher is responsible for the secondary program operation during the Summer Migrant Education Program including planning, carrying out activities, maintaining the classroom environment, supervising students, establishing and holding parent/teacher conferences/home visits. The Migrant Education Services Secondary Lead Teacher provides leadership and direction to other staff and cooperates with other staff in providing services for the students and their parents. The Migrant Education Services Secondary Lead Teacher ensures all secondary students in grades 8-12 are enrolled in the district, have a MARSS number, and an official transcript is generated for all secondary students and a copy submitted in accordance with program requirements. Creative programming may be necessary in order to meet student needs and remove barriers for students. This position is responsible for creating and facilitating a safe, healthy environment that provides intentional developmentally appropriate learning opportunities for the students served. Helps recruit potential parents by providing information to them about the various program services and benefits offered to enrolled students and families.

INDIVIDUALIZING/EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

  • Determines the needs of students and plans and expedites services accordingly.
  • Observes students, documents and refers those requiring additional services, i.e. mental health, nutrition, disabilities and other consultation as appropriate.
  • Assists in planning and conducts activities with students that creates a developmentally appropriate and varied range of opportunities to explore and experience which meet the individual needs of the child (i.e. developing social and communication skills, self-esteem, creativity, self-reliance, etc.).
  • Assists in coordinating attainment of graduation requirements, credit accrual for secondary students and out-of-school youth (OSY) and transition to post-secondary or employment.
  • Ensures program design for secondary students and out-of-school youth (OSY) is flexible to ensure secondary migratory students and OSY have the opportunity to earn course credit successfully before returning to school in the fall.
  • Reduce educational gaps for students at the secondary levels through supplemental instruction, credit recovery and access to out-of-state testing (e.g., Conversations Helping to Achieve Targets (CHAT) program through the Minnesota Migrant Education Program).
  • Assist in incorporating a postsecondary component into the program (e.g., speaker from local college, plan site visit to local postsecondary institutions). Develop alternative options or strategies to serve and support secondary students and OSY.
  • Ensure that all secondary students in grades 8-12 working toward credit accrual are enrolled in the district.
