Description:

MULTI-LAYER INSULATION (MLI) TECHNICIAN

Salary: £26,784 per annum
Hours: Full time (We understand the importance of work-life balance, and are happy to discuss flexible working with applicants).
Contract Type: 6 month fixed term
Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire
Together, our scientist, technologists, engineers and business support team explore the unknown and turn what they find into work that changes the world around us. Whether it’s sending probes into space or finding new ways to treat cancer, everyone here plays a vital role in making a positive difference to society.
We have a full-time 6 month fixed term contract for the role of MLI Technician within RAL Space to produce and fit thermal insulation blankets that are used to protect satellites and their equipment in space.
As this job does not fulfil the UK Government minimum criterion for obtaining sponsored migrant worker status we will be unable to apply for sponsorship for anyone not eligible to work in the UK. At interview, all shortlisted candidates are required to bring with them identification documents and original documents that prove they hold or can obtain the right to work in the UK. You can check your eligibility here: https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa/y
Our Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) blankets are hand-made from sheets of reflective material, with netting to separate the layers, and specialist tapes to seal the finished product. The design and folding of the blankets allow them to cover space hardware. The bespoke blankets vary in complexity, size, and shape. MLI blankets are used on almost every satellite that is launched and are critical in protecting these structures from the extreme temperatures of space.

Responsibilities:

  • Manufacturing blankets to a high standard under supervision using set procedures and established techniques. N.B This is working with scalpels and sharps in a cleanroom environment.
  • Completing documentation relating to each blanket.
  • Helping to fit blankets to spacecraft and instruments. More often than not this involves working at heights.
  • Maintaining a record of materials and parts.
  • Preparing completed blankets for shipping.
MLI blanket manufacture requires particular care, attention to detail and patience. You will be required to follow written and verbal instructions to ensure that the blankets are manufactured to a high standard and to the required specification. A comprehensive training program will be provided on the methods and procedures used to manufacture MLI blankets.
Keeping clear and accurate records is critical for all products built for space. Individual technicians need to be proactive in the completion of records, materials used and residual stock levels so ability to use general PC applications is essential.
The role is predominantly based within a cleanroom, so previous experience of similar environments would be an advantage but not essential. The Integration of the blankets onto hardware can sometimes require a degree of agility, can be at height or in difficult positions and the work can be physically demanding. Integration will sometimes take place on the customers premises, usually in the UK but there may be occasions where foreign travel may be needed for a short period. It would be advantageous to have a full UK driving license although this is not essential.
The interviews will last circa 1 hour 45 minutes and will include a practical test.
