INTRODUCTION

This is a contractual, position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.
Two (2) Long-Term Contractual Vacancies; Full-time; 12 Month Contract with the possibility of renewal

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Three years of experience, one year of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management and an additional two years of experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study and one year of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute additional education beyond the completion of the 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Customer Service Experience.
  • Experience operating farming or heavy equipment such as tractors, loaders, dozers, etc.
  • Commercial Class A or B driver’s license is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in the operation of a Managed Hunt Program.

Responsibilities:

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

The primary responsibility of this position is to coordinate administration of the managed hunting program at a Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS) field office. This task involves registering hunters in an annual program and issuing daily reservations to participants. The employee also conducts lotteries for high use days. There is extensive interaction with hunters to explain the program, resolve conflicts, inform them of various opportunities and explain regulations. The employee is responsible to communicate with hunters via the phone, email and in person. Employee conducts limited supervision with instruction and training of Seasonal Contractual Natural Resource Tech. I employee about Managed Hunt Permit Program.
A secondary responsibility is to assist with habitat management projects, maintenance/repair of facilities/equipment and wildlife surveys on Wildlife Management Areas, other DNR owned or controlled properties and certain private properties in the Region for the purpose of wildlife conservation/protection and public recreation. This position also assists with Wildlife Response activities.
This position requires basic knowledge of land management practices, farming equipment maintenance/repair/use, common wildlife species identification, vehicle maintenance/repair/use, and the application of routine wildlife management techniques and principles.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service is seeking two (2) interested candidates for contractual Natural Resources Technician II positions for the Myrtle Grove Office located in La Plata, MD. This is semi-professional work related to managing wildlife resources, habitat, and public recreation on public and private lands. This position will assist with land management activities throughout the Southern Region and the operation of the Managed Hunt Program located at the Myrtle Grove Wildlife and Heritage Service Office. Responsibilities include assisting with land management operations, habitat projects, and maintenance activities on DNR lands. Processing seasonal hunting permits and reservations for licensed hunters to access Department of Natural Resources Public Lands. Additional responsibilities will include answering public inquiries regarding wildlife, hunting and trapping regulations, and public use opportunities.
