Responsibilities:
The Nurse Practitioner’s a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class who uses advanced nursing knowledge and skill to direct, provide optimal care to acute and chronic patients in inpatient beds. The Nurse Practitioner functions within the Mission, Vision and Values of Peterborough Regional Health Centre and the CNO standards for Nurse Practitioners and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health care team to provide patient care and facilitate evidence-based practice. The Nurse Practitioner promotes judicious use of resources through using good clinical judgment when ordering medications and diagnostic tests, monitoring length of stay, facilitating discharge planning and participating in quality improvement initiatives.
Reporting to the Director of the program where they have primary responsibility with a matrix structure to the Chief Nursing Executive (CNE) and liaising with their physician mentor, the RN (EC) will work within their full scope of practice. The RN (EC) functions in an expanded role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions and appropriately manage acute/chronic illness and promote wellness. The RN (EC) functions in a collegial and professional relationship with physicians, nurses and other interdisciplinary team members who influence the health environment. The collaborative practice of the RN (EC) includes accepting referrals from, consulting with, or referring to other health care providers in order to promote comprehensive and continuity of care
There are five interrelated responsibilities of the NP role: clinical practitioner, educator, leader, consultant, and researcher. These components are not separate and distinct but are woven into the everyday functioning of the NP role.
