How you make a difference:
As a Nurse Practitioner, you will provide medical care and treatment to the inmate population under the direct supervision of the Health Services Administrator (HSA), Program Manager (PM), or higher medical professional, and assist the Physician in addressing behavioral health disorders and other medical conditions. You will collaborate with the healthcare team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations at the agency, local, state, and federal levels. Your responsibilities will include coordinating patient care, providing ongoing evaluation and treatment, and documenting findings using established methods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical care and treatment to inmates by holding daily sick call, carrying out physicians’ orders, and performing minor surgical procedures, annual physical exams, and appropriate laboratory studies.
  • Recognize and treat non-psychotic behavioral health disorders pharmacologically as indicated, and collaborate with the Psychiatrist to provide ongoing care for patients on maintenance doses of non-psychotic medications.
  • Identify medical emergencies and provide appropriate emergency care, arrange for patient transfer as needed, and coordinate patient admissions to the OHU and develop treatment plans with nursing staff.
  • Ensure confidentiality of persons served health information, document all findings using the S.O.A.P.E. method, and provide discharge planning as required.
  • Participate in Quality Management and Peer Review activities, attend quarterly Quality Management meetings, and successfully complete and continue practice of the OneCare team’s educational program, Medical Provider Training for Prescribing Mental Health Drugs.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education

  • Completion of a master’s program in nursing (NPs) or an accredited education program for PAs

Experience

  • Previous correctional/detention facility experience
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience

Licenses/Certifications

  • Unrestricted current license, certification, or registration in state of practice - must maintain all certifications, educational requirements, licensing, etc.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration
  • Current (and must maintain) lifesaving BLS and PALS (where applicable) certification through AHA
