Responsibilities:

AT BATH AND NORTH EAST SOMERSET COUNCIL, WE HAVE ONE OVERRIDING PURPOSE – TO IMPROVE PEOPLE’S LIVES.

We have a rare and exciting opportunity to train as an occupational therapist, meaning you can work and earn as you study.
If you have a background in health or social care or have been considering occupational therapy as a career and prefer to complete a degree while working, this could be the ideal pathway for you. Once qualified you will be able to practice as an occupational therapist.
As an occupational therapist, you will use your creativity and problem-solving skills to support people who find some areas of life difficult and help them to increase or maintain their independence to do the things they want or need to do.
If you have a passion for working with people and are highly motivated, we want to hear from you!
The Occupational Therapy apprenticeship training program is delivered in conjunction with University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol. Therefore, the successful applicant would be offered the post subject to being accepted onto their programme. It is typically a 4-year programme, spending 1000 hours on clinical placement, taught 1-2 days per week at the university (except during the full-time placements). During academic modules there is also an expectation of independent study and work place learning.
You will be work in the Adult Social Care Occupational Therapy Team learning alongside them in the workplace for the days not at UWE or on placement. You will have a mentor assigned to you from within the Occupational Therapy Team who will support your learning.
We are a friendly and supportive team of OTs and OTAs and are passionate about the service we offer. You will have a comprehensive induction period, regular supervision and the opportunity to attend our Peer Supervision group to share best practice.
Degree level apprenticeships are becoming a popular way to study Occupational Therapy in England. Following successful completion of the course you will be awarded a BSc(hons) in Occupational Therapy and the Apprenticeship Certificate. You will then be eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as an Occupational Therapist.

YOUR ROLE

As a Social Care Occupational Therapy Apprentice your days will be varied and fulfilling

You will initially learn how to

  • Undertake assessments for adults in their own homes who have complex and long-term physical disabilities, to prevent, reduce or delay the need for care.
  • Make recommendations for minor and major home adaptations.
  • Assess for equipment to promote independence and safety at home.
  • Carry out assessments for re-housing applications.

As the course progresses you will develop core skills and competencies. You will develop confidence in your rationale for interventions and to perform a variety of assessments. You will also learn about occupational therapy skills in other settings, for example, health or hospital.
