Mott MacDonald is looking to hire a motivated individual to join our growing team in Toronto in order to develop, support, and provide oversight on the execution of Signaling and Train Control Systems projects for rail and transit systems. As part of our Rail Systems Team that spans Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto, this position will provide the opportunity to work for Canadian clients such as Metrolinx, TTC, and Translink. There will also be opportunities to support capital projects in other geographic locations including the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, tapping into the expertise of our global practices.
This role will report to the Signaling and Train Control Systems Lead.

Job Description:

  • Review signaling system designs, specifications, installation, and testing plans for compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and guidelines
  • Provide technical advisory and input to clients in the development of system requirements and contract documents for Signaling and Train Control Systems projects
  • Support design and provide design oversight on Train Control Systems for rail and transit projects
  • Contribute to the development, adoption, and delivery of railway signaling design processes within MM’s North American practices
  • Witness and report on observed gaps and deficiencies noticed during installation checkout, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), or System Integration Testing (SIT)
  • Apply lessons learned and advise on necessary corrective actions for ongoing projects
  • Provide technical support to teams at all stages of the Project life cycle
  • Develop and work with key delivery partners and service providers for projects.
  • Engage with end clients as and when necessary

Candidate Specifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering/Science (preferably Electrical/Mechanical/Systems Engineering)
  • Minimum 5 - 10 years’ progressive experience working on Train Control Systems for passenger rail and transit projects and familiarity with various lifecycle aspects such as design, hardware/software development, verification & validation, testing & commissioning, installation & deployment, operation, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of and experience in Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Operation (ATO), European Rail Traffic Management System (ETCS), or Communications Based Train Control (CBTC).
  • Must be located in the Greater Toronto Area or willing to relocate
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation from PEO, or eligible for license
  • Experience working on Canadian and/or American rail systems
  • Able to hold competent technical discussions with Client representatives
  • Flexible to travel to client and vendor sites within the Greater Toronto Area on a regular basis as required by the project(s)
  • Periodic travel (<10%) to other locations (e.g. Calgary, Vancouver) may be required
  • Good interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplined team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and fluency in EnglishINCOSE ASEP or CSEP certification is desirable
