The Position
As operations research engineer you develop tools and models for the economic optimization of various parts of our manufacturing value chains. You work very closely with a wider range of different teams across the organization to ensure that the tools and models match the business needs in an ever changing and challenging environment as we are going through the energy transition. With the tools and models you perform strategic studies on VARO’s assets as well as the wider business. You are a creative team player that supports the value chain optimization team with technical advice and qualitative guidance, identifies and drives improvements to our mathematical models and makes sure that our toolsets are fit for purpose.

Your key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain optimization models for refinery and renewables fuels value chains, using most advanced process engineering and market economics know-how
  • Develop and maintain supporting software tools for optimization processes, like input and output data management
  • Drive innovations in the field of optimization tools and technology
  • Work with IT department to develop and maintain a sustainable infrastructure for the business
  • Provide support and expertise within and outside of planning and optimization departments
  • Perform economic project benefits analysis to support business development

Your profile - Essential
knowledge, skills &

abilities

  • Academic degree in operations research (OR), applied mathematics, computer sciences, economical sciences, process engineering or related field, required
  • Good understanding of OR techniques required, i.e. linear programming, mixed-integer programming, non-linear programming, …
  • Advanced Programming skills required
  • Excellent English language skills (verbal & writing) required, German/French benefitial
  • Advanced knowledge of Mircrosoft Excel, Access preferred
  • 3 years working experience preferred, ideally in energy industry
  • Refinery process and economics knowledge preferred
  • Refinery model development experience, ideally in GRTMPS desired
