Position Summary:
The Operations Superintendent reports to the Sector Operations Supervisors, assisting in their role of maintenance of building equipment and provision of an optimal environment for academic and research purposes, in support of the University mission.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Sector Operations Supervisors in the management of tradesmen stationed in the zones such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters, control technicians, building operators and any other trades;
  • Ensure that all work is executed in accordance with the McGill standards and that this unit meets the objectives of quality and service;
  • Assist the Sector Operations Supervisors in ensuring the healthy operation of all equipment related to Building systems at the University;
  • Supervise all work to be done on Building systems and help to determine the priorities for the renovation and/or modernization of related equipment;
  • Distribute and oversee execution of work of trades employees;
  • Monitor the resources (work orders, inventory, etc), performance of activities and quality of work undertaken and help operate the unit as cost effectively as possible;
  • Planning activities for units, their programs, coordinate small improvement needs;
  • Consults existing plans, documents and systems as required and acts as a resource person in resolving problems and verifying progression of work;
  • Participates in coordinating the work of consultants, contractors and site inspectors and their work schedules;
  • Prepares reports and other documents related to area of activity as well as maintaining records and files and updates computerized files and drawings;
  • Participates in developing and implementing programs and schedules for preventive and predictive maintenance (PM and PPM);
  • Maintain a high level of quality of service and seeks best practices in the business process review associated with this activity.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
The individual should be current on compliance with building codes and municipal by-laws. Proven experience in electricity with 600v and less and awareness of 25kv safety standards, plumbing – including water network distribution, steam production and transport, HVAC, architectural and other building systems maintenance. Demonstrated ability to lead trade staff and oversee distribution/execution of maintenance work. Proven ability for problem solving, planning and executing priorities. Strong organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Experience working in a computerized environment using word-processing, databases and spreadsheets. Ability to read/interpret architectural drawings. Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (Maximo; FAMIS, MMP, Workday, others). English and French, spoken and written.

Additional Information:

  • The incumbent must be available 24/7 for stand-by rotation and overtime when required;
  • The incumbent will be required to work at both the downtown and/or McDonald Campus, subject to operational needs;
  • The incumbent will be expected to make rounds and be physically present in their dedicated sector.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.
