Description:

We require a band 3 ophthalmic technician to support qualified nursing staff in the vitreo-retinal emergency and out-patient units and provide high quality individualised care to a defined group of service users, relatives and carers. Ensuring the safety and well-being of service users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles.
We are a small team of specialist nurses and allied health care professionals, that look after the care of our vitreo retinal patients before, and after surgery .
If you are compassionate, willing to learn new challenges and able to work alongside our team delivering care to our patients, then apply for our vacant ophthalmic technician post. As this is a highly specialised ophthalmic unit, previous experience of working within an ophthalmic setting as a technician is essential, along with a willingness to take on new challenges within the service .
To support qualified staff in the assessment of health needs, planning,
delivery and evaluation of care for a number of individuals or groups of
patients, including clinical risk assessment.
To exercise a reasonable and agreed degree of professional autonomy and
make judgements and decisions in order to satisfy the expectations and
demands of the job.
To undertake clinical work and related tasks as delegated by qualified nursing staff, following appropriate training and assessment of competency.
To liaise effectively with all stakeholders in the care process, including carers and relatives, aspiring to provide an effective, seamless and integrated service to patients.
To attain the skills and pass the relevant trust competencies for
communication, assessment of visual acuity and other skills relevant to the vitreo retinal out patient department.
To act as chaperone when required.
To escort patients to other areas of the trust and to external diagnostic testing when required to do so.

To plan and implement straightforward tasks and work guided by standard operating procedures and protocols including the initial assessment of patients in the both the vitreo retinal emergency unit and out-patient clinics- including but not exclusively : visual acuity testing, intraocular pressure reading using icare/Goldman tonometry, R.A.P.D. assessment and instillation of dilating drops .
Send appropriate patients for specific tests, ie OCT, ultrasound and optometry before they are assessed by the medical team, explaining to the patients what tests are for.
Be able to perform OCT and autorefraction on patients when required
Ensure the clinical areas are cleaned before each session and re-stocked with appropriate drops, stationary, clinical instruments etc
Complete all appropriate paperwork for allocated patients, recording findings in a legible and accurate manner, according to the Trust’s policy
